A Guide to Over / Under Goals
Over/under goals is one of the simplest and most popular football markets. You are not betting on who wins, only on how many goals the match produces.
The one-line version
You bet on whether total goals in a match will be over or under a set line, usually 2.5. The winner does not matter, only the combined goal count of both teams.
What is over/under goals?
The bookmaker sets a goals line, most often 2.5. You bet Over if you think there will be three or more goals, or Under if you think there will be two or fewer. Both teams’ goals are added together.
The half in 2.5 exists so there can never be a tie: a match cannot end with exactly 2.5 goals. That keeps the most common line clean, with a straight win or lose outcome.
How the 2.5 line settles
Any match with three or more goals settles Over 2.5. Two goals or fewer settles Under 2.5. The result and who scored are irrelevant.
Common goals lines
2.5 is the standard, but bookmakers offer several lines so you can match the bet to the game.
Lower lines are safer with smaller returns; higher lines pay more but need a goal glut. Pick the line that fits how open you expect the match to be.
How to find over/under bets
Over/under dos and don’ts
Do
- Base your bet on goals data and xG, not just recent scorelines
- Match the line to how open you expect the game to be
- Consider Under when a strong defence meets a weak attack
Don’t
- Assume big teams always mean Over, some grind out 1-0 wins
- Chase Over late in a match without value in the price
- Ignore weather and pitch, which can suppress goals

We flag over and under selections whenever the data and the odds point to value.
