Aston Villa begin their 2026-27 Champions League campaign with a difficult trip to Belgium to face Club Brugge at the Jan Breydel Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The contrast in domestic form could hardly be greater. Club Brugge have won four of their opening five league matches, while Villa remain without a Premier League victory — or even a goal — after three rounds.
However, Villa’s 0-0 draw at Hull City was considerably more encouraging than the scoreline suggests. Unai Emery’s side generated around 1.75 xG, 13 shots and three big chances, having produced only around 0.65 xG across their opening two league matches combined. The performance suggested that Villa’s attacking problems may finally be beginning to ease.
Villa also have one of Europe’s most experienced knockout managers in Unai Emery, and their performances in UEFA competition under the Spaniard have regularly exceeded their domestic level.
At attractive odds of 2.40, our best bet is Aston Villa to Win, with a tight 0-1 away victory our correct-score prediction.

Match Preview
Aston Villa’s Premier League campaign has started terribly on paper.
Three matches have produced one point, three defeats or draws combined and zero goals, with Villa losing 4-0 at Brighton and 1-0 at home to Arsenal before Saturday’s goalless draw at Hull.
The attacking numbers from the opening two fixtures were particularly alarming. Villa failed to register a single shot on target against either Brighton or Arsenal and generated only around 0.65 combined expected goals.
But Saturday was different.
Villa dominated possession at Hull and created enough opportunities to win the match. They finished with 13 attempts and approximately 1.75 xG, while creating three big chances. Another data source put Villa’s xG at 1.74, compared with Hull’s 0.58.
The goals still did not arrive, but the underlying performance was far healthier.
That distinction matters when assessing Tuesday’s game.
Against Brighton and Arsenal, Villa’s problem was creating chances. Against Hull, their problem was finishing them.

There is another reason not to dismiss Villa because of their domestic results: Unai Emery’s European record.
Villa won the Europa League last season and have lost only three of their last 21 UEFA group or league-phase matches under Emery, winning 16.
Their Champions League record under the Spaniard is also strong, with eight victories from 12 matches.
Villa have undergone a significant summer rebuild, but European football remains an environment in which Emery is exceptionally comfortable.
Club Brugge will nevertheless provide a serious test.
The Belgian champions have started their domestic season with four victories from five matches, scoring nine goals and conceding only twice. They have also kept four clean sheets.
Their results include convincing 3-0 victories against Kortrijk and OH Leuven, a 1-0 derby win against Cercle Brugge and Friday’s 1-0 victory at Lommel. Their only defeat was a 2-1 loss at Gent.
The Jan Breydel Stadium has also become a difficult European venue. Club Brugge have lost only three of their last 22 UEFA home matches, winning 13.
Villa know that better than most.
They lost 1-0 in Bruges during the 2024-25 Champions League league phase.
But what happened afterwards is arguably more relevant.
Villa faced Brugge again in the last 16 and won 3-1 in Belgium before completing a 6-1 aggregate victory.
That experience should remove any fear surrounding Tuesday’s trip.
Why Aston Villa to Win Makes Sense
Backing a team that has not scored a league goal this season at 2.40 requires an explanation.
The starting point is Saturday’s performance.
Villa’s result at Hull was disappointing, but their attacking process improved dramatically. After producing only around 0.65 xG in their first two Premier League matches combined, they generated approximately 1.75 xG in one afternoon at Hull.
Three big chances were missed.
That does not guarantee Villa will suddenly start scoring, but it suggests their zero-goal total is beginning to become less representative of the chances they are creating.
There is also more attacking talent available to Emery.
Nicolas Jackson is still searching for his first competitive Villa goal, but he has Champions League pedigree after contributing three goals and two assists during last season’s competition.
Alejandro Garnacho and Ibrahim Mbaye give Villa additional pace in wide areas, while João Gomes can return in Europe despite his domestic suspension.
Then there is Emery.
Very few managers have a better record of preparing teams for European competition, and Villa’s recent UEFA results support that reputation.
Club Brugge’s domestic form deserves respect, particularly defensively, but there is still a significant difference in individual quality between these squads.
Villa have also already proved they can win at this stadium, beating Brugge 3-1 here during the 2024-25 knockout stage.
At 2.40, I think the market is placing too much emphasis on Villa’s opening Premier League results and not enough on their European pedigree and improved underlying attacking performance at Hull.

Team News
Club Brugge could again be without Joel Ordóñez, who has yet to feature this season.
Nicolò Tresoldi is expected to lead the attack and has quickly become one of Brugge’s biggest threats. Carlos Forbs also provides pace and creativity around the striker.
Villa have received encouragement surrounding Johan Manzambi, who is approaching a return from his knee injury. Tuesday could come slightly too early for a start, although a place among the substitutes is possible.
João Gomes is available because his domestic suspension does not carry over into UEFA competition, giving Emery an important midfield option.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis cannot feature after being omitted from Villa’s Champions League squad.
Emery also has decisions to make in attack.
Ibrahim Mbaye was an unused substitute at Hull, while Alejandro Garnacho came from the bench. With Villa desperate for greater penetration around Nicolas Jackson, one or both could be introduced from the start in Belgium.
Possible Starting Lineups
Club Brugge:
Sommer; Seys, Mechele, Spileers, Sabbe; Stankovic, Vanaken; Forbs, Vermant, Diakhon; Tresoldi
Aston Villa:
Suzuki; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelöf, Pau Torres, Maatsen; Kamara, João Gomes; Mbaye, McGinn, Garnacho; Jackson
Players to Watch
Nicolò Tresoldi — Club Brugge
Tresoldi has quickly established himself as one of Club Brugge’s principal attacking threats.
The young striker has started the campaign strongly and will be particularly important if Brugge adopt a more direct approach against Villa.
Villa’s defence will need to prevent him from receiving too much service inside the penalty area.
Nicolas Jackson — Aston Villa
This feels like an important game for Jackson.
The striker has yet to score his first competitive Aston Villa goal, but Villa finally started creating meaningful opportunities against Hull.
Jackson also possesses Champions League experience and produced three goals and two assists during last season’s competition.
If Villa’s chance creation from Saturday carries into Tuesday, Jackson should finally receive opportunities from dangerous positions.
Boubacar Kamara — Aston Villa
Kamara could be particularly important in a European away game where Villa cannot afford to become stretched.
His ability to protect the defence while allowing Villa’s more attacking midfielders and full-backs to advance should be central to Emery’s approach.
Head-to-Head
Club Brugge and Aston Villa have met three times competitively, all during the 2024-25 Champions League.
Club Brugge 1-0 Aston Villa
Champions League League Phase
Club Brugge 1-3 Aston Villa
Champions League Round of 16
Aston Villa 3-0 Club Brugge
Champions League Round of 16
Villa therefore responded emphatically to their initial defeat in Belgium, winning both knockout meetings by a combined 6-1 aggregate score.
Club Brugge’s wider record against English opposition is another concern. Their league-phase victory against Villa remains their only win across their last 17 matches against English clubs.
Final Verdict
It would be easy to look at the domestic tables and immediately side with Club Brugge.
The Belgian champions have won four of five, kept four clean sheets and are extremely difficult to beat at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
Villa have taken one point from nine and still have not scored a Premier League goal.
But the numbers behind Saturday’s performance change the picture.
Villa created approximately 1.75 xG against Hull, almost three times the expected-goals total they generated across their opening two league matches combined. They should have won that game.
Now they move into a competition where Emery has repeatedly demonstrated his ability.
Villa have already beaten Brugge at this stadium under Emery, possess the stronger squad on paper and should benefit from João Gomes returning to midfield.
I don’t expect an easy night.
Club Brugge’s strong defensive start and Villa’s ongoing finishing problems make a high-scoring away victory difficult to support.
Instead, I expect Villa to stay patient, limit Brugge’s opportunities and eventually find the breakthrough they have been threatening.
At 2.40, Aston Villa to Win is our selection.
