Erling Haaland once again proved why he is one of the world’s most feared strikers, scoring twice as Norway secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Senegal and booked their place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.
Norway dominated proceedings from the opening whistle in New Jersey and nearly took the lead after just three minutes when Kristoffer Ajer forced a superb save from Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
The Scandinavian side controlled possession and created the better chances throughout the first half. Their persistence was finally rewarded in the 43rd minute when Marcus Pedersen capitalized on a defensive mistake to give Norway a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half began in perfect fashion for the Norwegians. Just moments after the restart, captain Martin Ødegaard produced a trademark through ball to find Haaland, who calmly finished to double Norway’s advantage.
Senegal responded quickly through Ismaïla Sarr, who reduced the deficit to 2-1 after a well-worked attacking move. However, any hopes of a comeback were short-lived.
Only five minutes later, Haaland struck again, restoring Norway’s two-goal cushion and taking his tournament tally to four goals. The Manchester City forward continues to enjoy remarkable form and has now scored an incredible 59 goals in 52 international appearances for Norway.
Sarr grabbed his second goal late in the match, but Senegal could not find an equalizer as Norway held firm to secure all three points.
The victory guarantees Norway a place in the next round, while a highly anticipated group finale against France will determine who finishes top of the group. Senegal, meanwhile, must defeat Iraq in their final match and hope other results go their way to keep their qualification hopes alive.
