Kauno Zalgiris welcome Besiktas to the Darius and Girenas Stadium on Thursday for the second leg of their UEFA Europa League play-off, but the tie already looks heavily tilted towards the Turkish giants after a convincing 3-0 victory in Istanbul.
Besiktas raced into a 2-0 lead inside 12 minutes of the first leg through Hyeon-gyu Oh and Michael Murillo before Orkun Kökcü added a penalty after the break. Vincenzo Italiano’s side are therefore in a position where they simply do not need to chase another big victory.
That changes the betting picture completely. After a physically demanding league game against Alanyaspor only a few days earlier, rotation and energy management should be priorities for Besiktas. Rather than backing another handicap victory, Under 2.5 Goals at odds of 2.30 looks like the more logical value play.
Prediction Summary
Our prediction: Kauno Zalgiris 0-2 Besiktas
Besiktas have almost completed the job already.
A three-goal first-leg advantage means the Black Eagles can progress even after losing by two goals in Lithuania. There is therefore very little incentive for Italiano to make this an aggressive, end-to-end contest.
Besiktas have also been involved in a remarkable number of low-scoring competitive matches this season. Before losing 1-0 to Alanyaspor, they had beaten Midtjylland 1-0 and 2-0, Hradec Kralove 1-0 twice, Eyupspor 1-0 and Kauno Zalgiris 3-0.
Kauno need goals, but they were unable to seriously threaten Besiktas in Istanbul and now have to overturn a three-goal deficit against a much stronger squad.
We still expect Besiktas to win the second leg, but probably without spending unnecessary energy.
Under 2.5 Goals at 2.30 is our preferred bet.

Match Preview
Kauno Zalgiris face an enormous challenge.
Their first-leg trip to Istanbul lasted only six minutes before Besiktas took the lead.
Hyeon-gyu Oh headed the Turkish side in front before Michael Murillo doubled the advantage six minutes later, effectively putting Kauno into survival mode before the match had properly settled.

Orkun Kökcü’s second-half penalty completed the 3-0 victory.
Besiktas could have added more, but the most important element heading into the return fixture is that they did not concede. Italiano’s side therefore travel to Lithuania with a huge margin for error.
Kauno Zalgiris have already experienced an eventful European campaign.
The Lithuanian champions started in Champions League qualifying, overcoming Drita 4-3 on aggregate before eliminating KI Klaksvik 1-0.
The level increased dramatically against Dinamo Zagreb.
Kauno were beaten 5-0 away before losing 2-1 at home, resulting in a 7-1 aggregate defeat and dropping them into the Europa League play-offs.
Now they face another club with substantially greater resources.
The positive for Kauno is that Thursday’s second leg is at home, and there is virtually no pressure on them. Few expect a three-goal comeback, so they can attempt to make the game competitive and enjoy the occasion.
But their situation also creates a tactical problem.
They need to attack.
Besiktas do not.
And if Kauno commit too many players forward early, they expose themselves to the pace and technical quality of the Turkish visitors.
Besiktas’ European qualifying campaign has been extremely controlled.
They eliminated Midtjylland 3-0 on aggregate, winning 1-0 at home and 2-0 in Denmark. They then beat Hradec Kralove 1-0 both home and away before the 3-0 first-leg victory over Kauno.
That means Besiktas have played five Europa League qualifiers this season and won all five without conceding a single goal.
The aggregate score across those matches is 8-0.
That statistic is central to our Under 2.5 selection.
Italiano has shown no need to turn these qualifiers into chaotic matches.
Besiktas get ahead, control the game and protect their defensive structure.
Thursday offers even more reason to follow that approach.
The Black Eagles played away to Alanyaspor on Sunday and suffered their first competitive defeat of the campaign, losing 1-0. It was a demanding match only four days before this European return leg.
With a 3-0 aggregate lead and another Süper Lig fixture approaching, it makes little sense to demand maximum intensity from the first-choice players.
We should therefore see significant rotation.
Players such as Dusan Vlahovic, Milot Rashica or other squad options could receive minutes, while important starters may either begin on the bench or be withdrawn early if the tie remains comfortable.
That is precisely why I prefer Under 2.5 Goals rather than another Besiktas handicap.
A controlled 0-1 or 0-2 away victory would suit the Turkish side perfectly.

Why Under 2.5 Goals Makes Sense
The aggregate score changes everything.
If this were a one-off match, backing Besiktas to win comfortably would make plenty of sense.
But it is not.
Besiktas are 3-0 ahead.
Their only objective is qualification.
Italiano has absolutely no reason to ask his team to play at maximum tempo for 90 minutes and chase four or five goals.
The visitors can control possession, slow the game down and choose their moments.
Their European results already point strongly towards that approach:
Besiktas 1-0 Midtjylland
Midtjylland 0-2 Besiktas
Hradec Kralove 0-1 Besiktas
Besiktas 1-0 Hradec Kralove
Besiktas 3-0 Kauno Zalgiris
Four of those five qualifiers produced Under 2.5 Goals.
More remarkably, Besiktas have not conceded once.
Kauno’s problem is therefore obvious.
They need at least three goals just to force extra time against a side that has conceded zero goals in five European qualifying matches.
That looks extremely unlikely.
The first leg also gives Besiktas every reason to rotate.
Oh, Murillo and Kökcü already created the cushion in Istanbul, while Italiano has players such as Vlahovic available who can enter without requiring the entire first-choice attacking unit to play another 90 minutes.
Besiktas are also coming off Sunday’s 1-0 defeat in Alanya.
Even though the result was disappointing, Thursday is not the match where they need an emotional reaction.
They simply need professionalism.
Kauno may start aggressively because they have nothing to lose, but if there is no early goal, the tie could quickly lose intensity.
And if Besiktas score first?
The aggregate becomes 4-0.
At that point, the remaining contest effectively becomes about seeing the match out.
Our 0-2 correct-score prediction fits that scenario perfectly.
At odds of 2.30, Under 2.5 Goals offers considerably more value than simply backing Besiktas to qualify or win.

Team News
Rotation should be one of the biggest themes surrounding Besiktas.
Italiano has managed a demanding schedule throughout European qualifying and now possesses the luxury of a three-goal advantage.
Hyeon-gyu Oh scored the opening goal in Istanbul and has started the season well, while Dusan Vlahovic replaced him after an hour in the first leg.
That gives Italiano an obvious opportunity to rotate at centre-forward.
Leandro Trossard, Vaclav Cerny and Orkun Kökcü are among the players who have carried significant creative responsibility, but it would not be surprising if one or more received reduced minutes in Lithuania.
Besiktas made several changes during the first leg once they were 3-0 ahead, including introducing Vlahovic, Amir Hadziahmetovic and Milot Rashica.
Kauno have far less reason to rotate.
They need an extraordinary comeback and should therefore field the strongest available side.
But the emphasis cannot simply be on attacking recklessly.
An early Besiktas goal would effectively kill the tie, so Kauno also need to maintain enough defensive structure to keep themselves alive.
Players to Watch
Dusan Vlahovic
Vlahovic could be one of the major beneficiaries if Italiano rotates.
He entered after 60 minutes in Istanbul and could now receive a starting opportunity.
Against a Kauno defence forced to push higher than in the first leg, his movement behind the back line could be dangerous.
Hyeon-gyu Oh
Oh needed only six minutes to open the scoring in the first leg.
His early header immediately changed the nature of the tie, and he has given Italiano another reliable attacking option.
Whether he starts or is rested, his recent performances increase Besiktas’ depth considerably.
Orkun Kökcü
Kökcü scored from the penalty spot to make it 3-0 in Istanbul.
His technical quality gives Besiktas control in midfield, but with qualification nearly secured, Italiano may also decide to manage his minutes.
Giedrius Matulevicius
Kauno need leadership and composure more than anything.
The Lithuanian side cannot afford to become stretched immediately, and their experienced players will be crucial in keeping the second leg competitive for as long as possible.
Head-to-Head
There has been only one previous meeting between the clubs.
Besiktas 3-0 Kauno Zalgiris
Oh opened the scoring after six minutes, Murillo doubled the advantage in the 12th minute and Kökcü converted a penalty after the break.
That first leg was also Kauno’s first competitive meeting with Turkish opposition and Besiktas’ first against a Lithuanian club, according to the preview material shown.
The quality difference was obvious.
But Thursday’s second leg has a completely different tactical context.
Besiktas no longer need to demonstrate superiority.
They simply need to protect it.
Final Verdict
Besiktas should qualify comfortably.
That part is not particularly controversial.
The interesting question is how they approach the second leg.
After winning 3-0 in Istanbul and then playing a demanding league match against Alanyaspor only three days later, there is little reason for Italiano to send his strongest XI onto the pitch with instructions to attack relentlessly.
Qualification matters more than winning the second leg 4-0.
Kauno need to chase the tie, but they face a Besiktas side that has yet to concede a single goal in five Europa League qualifiers this season.
That defensive record cannot be ignored.
If Besiktas score first, the match could become extremely flat.
If Kauno keep it 0-0 for a long period, Besiktas will also be perfectly satisfied.
Both scenarios favour a low-scoring contest.
I still expect Besiktas’ superior individual quality to produce a couple of goals, particularly as Kauno eventually have to take risks.
But 0-2 feels much more realistic than another four or five-goal thriller.
At 2.30, Under 2.5 Goals is our best bet.
