It would be easy to overreact to Tottenham’s 3-0 opening defeat at Brentford.

Spurs were poor, but this is effectively a new team. De Zerbi is trying to integrate a huge collection of new players, and disrupted preparations following the World Cup have made that process more difficult.

Wednesday’s 5-1 victory against Charlton was therefore important.

The opposition was weaker, but Tottenham finally played with freedom, scored five times and saw Savio make a hugely encouraging home debut.

Match Preview

Tottenham’s huge summer rebuild received an immediate reality check at Brentford.

Despite starting four new signings, Spurs were beaten 3-0 and rarely looked comfortable.

De Zerbi admitted afterwards that his team had problems physically and lacked the intensity required, with Tottenham’s disrupted summer preparation clearly still affecting several players.

That raised obvious concerns.

Spurs have invested heavily in creating a squad capable of moving away from the struggles of recent seasons, and expectations are understandably high.

The response against Charlton was therefore encouraging.

Tottenham won 5-1 in the EFL Cup, with Mikey Moore, Dominic Solanke, Kevin Danso and Ben Davies among the scorers before Savio introduced himself to the home crowd with a goal and an assist from the bench.

That performance cannot simply erase what happened at Brentford.

But it reminded us of the attacking depth available to De Zerbi.

And that depth has increased again.

Omar Marmoush has arrived from Manchester City, providing another flexible forward who can operate centrally or from wider areas.

Savio’s arrival also gives Spurs the type of direct winger capable of turning possession into genuine attacking threat.

Then there is the midfield.

Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Conor Gallagher give Tottenham a combination of physicality, technical quality and Premier League experience that should eventually form one of the stronger midfield units outside the very top teams.

The challenge is getting everybody functioning together.

Saturday could provide the first real indication of how quickly that process is progressing.

Tottenham have won their opening home league fixture in each of the last five seasons, by an aggregate score of 14-1.

That is an interesting trend considering how badly they need a response.

Newcastle arrive with confidence of their own.

Matthias Jaissle’s first Premier League match in charge ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

The Magpies twice led, with Anthony Elanga among the scorers, but a 99th-minute penalty prevented them from taking all three points.

The biggest attraction is the price.

At 2.30, Tottenham only need to win this game roughly 43.5% of the time for the bet to break even mathematically.

I believe their true chance is higher.

There are legitimate concerns around Spurs.

They were dreadful against Brentford, several players are still building fitness and De Zerbi is trying to implement a new system with a heavily changed squad.

But that’s also why we’re getting 2.30 at home.

The quality on paper is difficult to ignore.

Savio looked excellent against Charlton.

Marmoush adds another dangerous forward.

Tonali is an elite midfielder when fully fit.

Mateus Fernandes and Gallagher add depth and intensity.

And Tottenham still possess proven players such as Solanke, Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro.

This is not a weak Tottenham squad.

It is an expensive, unfinished one.

The 5-1 cup victory should also have released some of the pressure created by the Brentford result.

Newcastle’s full-backs will have to prevent him gaining momentum in wide areas.

Omar Marmoush

Marmoush gives De Zerbi another completely different attacking option.

He can play centrally, drift wide or attack space behind the defensive line.

Whether he starts or comes from the bench, his arrival significantly improves Tottenham’s attacking depth.

Anthony Elanga

Elanga has already opened his account this season.

His pace could be particularly dangerous against a Tottenham team expected to dominate possession and push defenders forward.

If Spurs lose the ball cheaply, Elanga can punish them quickly in transition.

Harvey Barnes

Two goals from the bench against West Brom make Barnes difficult to ignore.

He is direct, carries genuine goal threat from the left and has the ability to attack the far post when Elanga creates from the opposite side.

Final Verdict

Tottenham’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford was a terrible start.

There is no reason to hide from that.

But one bad game should not make us completely dismiss what Spurs have built.
