The new Premier League season begins at the Emirates Stadium on Friday as reigning champions Arsenal welcome Championship winners Coventry City in the opening match of the 2026/27 campaign.
Arsenal enter the season as overwhelming favourites after ending their 22-year wait for the Premier League title last season, while Coventry return to the top flight for the first time in 25 years. The quality gap is obvious, but the match-winner market offers very little value. Instead, Both Teams to Score looks more interesting at odds of 2.45.
Prediction Summary
Our prediction: Arsenal 3-1 Coventry City
Arsenal should have far too much quality for the newly promoted Sky Blues, particularly at the Emirates, where they have an outstanding record against promoted teams. However, the available odds on an Arsenal victory are simply too short to offer much value. Coventry were prolific in winning the Championship last season and have invested heavily this summer, making Both Teams to Score at 2.45 the more attractive betting angle.

Match Preview
Arsenal begin the defence of their Premier League title at home on Friday, and Mikel Arteta’s side could hardly have been handed a more favourable fixture on paper.
The Gunners finally ended their 22-year wait for the Premier League title last season, finishing seven points ahead of Manchester City. After losing the Champions League final to PSG, Arsenal have quickly turned their attention towards another trophy challenge.

Their summer recruitment has also underlined their ambition.
Bruno Guimarães has arrived from Newcastle to strengthen an already formidable midfield, while Arsenal sent an early warning to the rest of the Premier League last weekend by beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield.
That result will only increase expectations ahead of the new campaign.
Arsenal have also built an extraordinary record against promoted sides at home. They are unbeaten in their last 45 home league matches against newly promoted teams, winning 40 and drawing five.
That makes an Arsenal victory extremely difficult to argue against.
The problem from a betting perspective is the price.
The bookmakers know exactly how big the gap between these teams is, meaning Arsenal’s outright win is available at very short odds. For me, that makes it difficult to justify as the best bet despite Arsenal being the obvious favourite.
Coventry City, meanwhile, return to the Premier League after a remarkable Championship campaign.
The Sky Blues stormed to the second-tier title last season and will now play top-flight football for the first time in 25 years. That is the longest gap between Premier League appearances in the competition’s history.
Frank Lampard has also been backed in the transfer market.
Coventry have broken their club-record transfer fee four times this summer as they attempt to build a squad capable of surviving in the Premier League. They know the opening fixture is about as difficult as it gets, but there should be plenty of confidence following their Championship success.
And that is where I see some potential value.
Coventry scored plenty of goals on their way to winning the Championship, while Ellis Simms finished last season strongly with a hat-trick and also scored in both of his pre-season appearances.
Arsenal’s defensive record is excellent, but they are missing William Saliba and Jurriën Timber through long-term injuries. Coventry also have a fully fit squad heading into the opener.
I don’t expect Coventry to sit back for 90 minutes and simply try to survive.
They have invested heavily, they have nothing to lose and this is an historic occasion for the club. One goal could completely change the dynamic of the game.
For that reason, Both Teams to Score at 2.45 looks considerably more interesting than backing Arsenal at a short price.
I expect Arsenal to win comfortably, but Coventry can contribute.
A 3-1 Arsenal victory is my prediction.

Why Both Teams to Score Makes Sense
The Arsenal win is the obvious outcome, but the price does not appeal to me.
This is exactly the type of fixture where looking beyond the match winner can uncover better value.
Arsenal ended last season with five consecutive home clean sheets, which is a major warning sign for anyone considering Coventry to score. However, Coventry were one of the Championship’s strongest attacking teams last season and have continued investing heavily ahead of their Premier League return.
They also have Ellis Simms.
Simms ended last season with a hat-trick and scored in both of Coventry’s pre-season matches. His previous Premier League goal also came in London, against Chelsea, showing that he is capable of causing problems against top-flight opposition.
Arsenal should dominate possession and create numerous chances, but Coventry will have opportunities of their own, particularly if Arsenal push their full-backs high and leave space in transition.
There is also the psychology of an opening-day fixture.
Coventry have absolutely nothing to lose.
Arsenal will be expected to win, while Coventry can approach the game with freedom. One goal for the visitors would make the BTTS bet a very realistic proposition.
At 2.45, I believe the price is worth taking.
If Arsenal score early, Coventry will eventually have to open up, which could create even more opportunities.
My expected result is Arsenal 3-1 Coventry City.

Team News
Arsenal remain without defenders William Saliba and Jurriën Timber, who are both dealing with long-term injuries.
The Gunners otherwise have an extremely strong squad available, with summer signing Bruno Guimarães expected to play an important role during the campaign.
Viktor Gyökeres could also make his first Premier League start against his former club.
The striker scored six times in five league matches against promoted sides last season, including four goals in two starts at the Emirates.
Coventry enter the match with a clean bill of health and can select from their strongest squad.
Frank Lampard will be hoping his new signings can immediately adapt to Premier League football.
Players to Watch
Viktor Gyökeres
Gyökeres could hardly have a better opponent for his first Premier League appearance of the season. His record against promoted teams is particularly impressive, and he will be eager to start the campaign with a goal.
Bukayo Saka
Saka remains one of Arsenal’s biggest attacking threats and should have plenty of opportunities against a Coventry defence that will spend long periods under pressure.
Ellis Simms
Simms finished last season strongly and scored in both of Coventry’s pre-season games. His physical presence could give Arsenal’s defence something different to deal with.
Head-to-Head
Coventry have won only one of their last 14 top-flight meetings with Arsenal, recording five draws and eight defeats.
Their record at the Emirates is particularly poor.
Coventry have lost both of their competitive visits to Arsenal’s current stadium by a combined 10-1 scoreline.
The last top-flight meeting between the clubs came all the way back in 2001, meaning Friday’s encounter represents a completely new chapter in the rivalry.
Arsenal have also won all three of their previous Premier League season openers as reigning champions.
Final Verdict
There is very little doubt about which team is stronger.
Arsenal are the reigning Premier League champions, have home advantage and have already beaten Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield.
Their record against newly promoted teams at the Emirates is also extraordinary.
But short odds do not automatically mean good value.
That is the reason I am avoiding the Arsenal win as the main bet. Coventry have invested heavily during the summer, won the Championship last season and have attacking players capable of causing Arsenal problems.
Ellis Simms is also coming into the game in good scoring form.
I expect Arsenal to control the game and ultimately win, but Coventry can find the net.
Both Teams to Score at 2.45 therefore looks like the better value option.
My prediction is Arsenal 3-1 Coventry City.
