Aston Villa welcome defending Premier League champions Arsenal to Villa Park on Monday evening in a fascinating clash between two sides who experienced completely different opening weekends.

Villa’s new-look team were hammered 4-0 away at Brighton, while Arsenal began their title defence with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Coventry City. The contrast is difficult to ignore: Arsenal already look settled and powerful, while Unai Emery is effectively rebuilding after losing several of the players who formed the core of last season’s side.

The situation has become even more difficult for Villa in the final days before this match. Ollie Watkins has completed his move to Al-Hilal, while Emiliano Martinez has joined Chelsea. Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Ezri Konsa are also among the major departures this summer.

Arsenal could hardly arrive in better shape. Mikel Arteta’s champions have started 2026-27 with consecutive 3-0 victories, beating Manchester City in the Community Shield before comfortably dispatching Coventry.

Our prediction is Aston Villa 0-2 Arsenal, with Arsenal -1 Asian Handicap at odds of 2.40 our best bet.

Match Preview

Aston Villa could hardly have experienced a worse opening weekend.

Unai Emery’s side travelled to Brighton and returned following a 4-0 defeat, with Victor Lindelof scoring an own goal and Joao Gomes being sent off during a disastrous afternoon. Gomes will consequently be suspended for Monday’s match.

However, the result is only part of the concern.

Villa have undergone an extraordinary transformation during the summer. Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa, Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins have all left the club. Watkins leaves as Villa’s all-time leading Premier League scorer after scoring 91 league goals, while Martinez was one of the team’s biggest leaders.

Villa have responded by bringing in players including Nicolas Jackson and Leon Goretzka, and both could feature against Arsenal. Jackson in particular faces the immediate task of replacing Watkins as the focal point of the attack.

But expecting all of these new pieces to immediately function as a cohesive unit against the Premier League champions is asking a lot.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal prediction and betting tips Premier League

Arsenal look significantly more settled begin the campaign among the clear title favourites. For a wider look at the new season, read our Premier League 2026-27 betting guide.

Arteta’s team won last season’s Premier League title and have started the new campaign exactly where they left off. Manchester City were beaten 3-0 in the Community Shield, before Coventry suffered the same scoreline at the Emirates.

Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were all on target against Coventry, while Arsenal have still not conceded a competitive goal this season.

Villa Park has caused Arsenal problems in recent seasons. Villa won this fixture 2-1 last season and have won four of the last seven Premier League meetings between the clubs at Villa Park.

But this Aston Villa side is very different.

The departure of so many established players removes much of the continuity that previously made Emery’s team such dangerous opponents for Arsenal.

Why Arsenal -1 Asian Handicap Makes Sense

The difference in stability between these teams is the main reason I like Arsenal.

Villa have lost an enormous amount of experience and quality during the summer. Watkins was their main goalscorer, Martinez a major leader, Rogers an important attacking player, Tielemans controlled games from midfield and Konsa was one of their most reliable defenders.

Arsenal, meanwhile, look like a team ready to defend their title.

They have scored six goals and conceded none across their opening two competitive matches, and the attacking combination of Saka, Odegaard and Havertz gives Villa a completely different challenge to the one they failed against at Brighton.

The -1 Asian Handicap is particularly attractive at 2.40 odds.

If Arsenal win by exactly one goal, the stake is returned. A victory by two or more goals gives us the full win.

Considering Villa’s current transition, Arsenal have every chance of producing exactly that.

Team News

Villa will be without Joao Gomes, who serves the first game of his three-match suspension following his red card against Brighton.

Amadou Onana remains unavailable with a knee injury, while Johan Manzambi and Brian Madjo are also expected to miss out.

The biggest changes concern Villa’s new arrivals and departures.

Watkins and Martinez are gone, meaning Villa must start a new era in two hugely important positions. Nicolas Jackson is available following his move from Chelsea and could immediately lead the attack, while Leon Goretzka is another major summer addition.

Arsenal have their own absentees.

William Saliba remains sidelined with a back injury and Jurrien Timber is unavailable, while Bruno Guimaraes has been dealing with a minor groin issue.

Former Villa defender Ezri Konsa is available to face his old club following his £55m move to Arsenal, although Arteta may initially keep him among the substitutes.

Possible Starting Lineups

Aston Villa:
Suzuki; Cash, Lindelof, Torres, Ruggeri; Bogarde, Kamara; Buendia, Barkley, McGinn; Jackson

Arsenal:
Raya; White, Mosquera, Gabriel, Calafiori; Rice, Lewis-Skelly; Saka, Odegaard, Tzolis; Havertz

Players to Watch

Nicolas Jackson could immediately become one of the central figures in Villa’s new-look attack. Replacing Watkins is a huge responsibility, and facing Arsenal’s defence represents an extremely difficult first assignment.

For Arsenal, Bukayo Saka remains the obvious danger. He scored against Coventry and gives Arsenal the individual quality to punish Villa whenever space appears on the right.

Martin Odegaard will also be important. If Arsenal dominate possession as expected, his movement and passing around Villa’s penalty area could be decisive.

Head-to-Head

Aston Villa have been a difficult opponent for Arsenal in recent seasons, particularly at Villa Park.

Villa won 2-1 at home in the most recent meeting between the sides, although Arsenal responded emphatically by winning 4-1 at the Emirates later last season.

Historically, Arsenal lead the fixture with 89 victories from 207 meetings, compared with 72 Villa wins and 46 draws.

The biggest question is whether those recent Villa Park trends remain relevant after such a dramatic summer rebuild.

Final Verdict

Aston Villa have traditionally made life extremely difficult for Arsenal at Villa Park, but I think the circumstances are very different this time.

Villa have lost too many important players at once.

Watkins and Martinez leaving immediately before this fixture only adds to a summer in which Emery has already seen Rogers, Tielemans and Konsa depart.

New players such as Jackson and Goretzka undoubtedly bring quality, but building a new team takes time.

Arsenal do not have that problem.

The champions look organised, confident and settled, and they have started the season with two 3-0 victories and two clean sheets.

I expect Villa to produce a reaction in front of their own supporters, but Arsenal should eventually take control.

At 2.40, Arsenal -1 offers excellent value because a narrow one-goal victory simply returns our stake.

Our correct-score prediction is Aston Villa 0-2 Arsenal.
