Manchester United play their first Premier League home game of the 2026/27 season on Sunday when newly-promoted Ipswich Town visit Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick’s side suffered a shock 2-0 defeat away to Hull City on the opening weekend despite recording 21 attempts, while Ipswich made a dream start to life back in the top flight by beating Sunderland 2-1 before following it with a 3-1 EFL Cup victory over Leicester City.
United therefore arrive under immediate pressure to respond, but this is exactly the type of home fixture where their superior attacking quality should become clear. With Bruno Fernandes supplying Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and potentially Marcus Rashford, the hosts have far more firepower than they showed at the MKM Stadium.
Our best bet is Manchester United -1.5 Asian Handicap at odds of 2.10, with a 3-1 home victory our correct-score prediction. Looking for a higher-odds alternative? Prediction Summary
Our prediction: Manchester United 3-1 Ipswich Town
Manchester United were poor against Hull, but one disappointing match should not erase the excellent work Carrick produced after returning last season.
United won 12 of their final 17 Premier League matches under Carrick to finish third, and their latest-ten league record remains strong at W6-D2-L2 despite the opening defeat. They have scored 18 goals across that sequence.
Sunday also brings them back to Old Trafford.
Ipswich deserve respect after beating Sunderland and Leicester, but there is a major difference between those fixtures and facing a United side desperate to respond in its first home game.
The Tractor Boys have invested heavily, but their latest ten Premier League matches still show the defensive vulnerability associated with their previous top-flight spell: 21 goals conceded in ten matches.
At 2.10, asking United to win by two or more goals looks more attractive than taking the short straight home-win price.

Match Preview
Manchester United could hardly have expected their new Premier League season to begin with defeat against Hull City.
Carrick’s team dominated possession at the MKM Stadium and finished with 21 attempts, but the headline problem was creating enough genuinely dangerous opportunities from that volume.
Hull punished them instead.
Semi Ajayi opened the scoring after Senne Lammens could only divert Oli McBurnie’s effort onto the post, before Nobel Mendy doubled the advantage.
It was a historic result for Hull and a significant warning for United.
However, there is important context.
Carrick dramatically improved this team after returning during the second half of last season. Manchester United were seventh when he arrived and ultimately finished third, winning 12 of their final 17 league games.
Their final run included victories over Chelsea, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Brighton.
So this is not a team that suddenly became poor because of one result.
United also strengthened during the summer.
Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans give Carrick different midfield options, while Carlos Baleba has now arrived from Brighton.
Baleba will not make his debut this weekend, however, after Carrick confirmed that an ankle injury will keep him sidelined for up to three weeks.
The attacking unit remains the biggest reason to expect improvement.
Bryan Mbeumo can stretch Ipswich’s defence with his movement and pace.
Matheus Cunha provides creativity and directness.
Bruno Fernandes remains the player most capable of creating something from nothing.
And Marcus Rashford is pushing for a return to the starting XI after the disappointing performance at Hull.
Against Ipswich, United should spend plenty of time attacking around the penalty area.
The visitors arrive with confidence.
Ipswich beat Sunderland 2-1 in their Premier League return, with Jack Clarke scoring the winner in the 90th minute. Reuters described it as an emotional return to the division after their previous relegation.
They then made nine changes for the EFL Cup and still beat Leicester 3-1.
That is an excellent opening week for Gary O’Neil.
Marcelino Nunez strengthened his case for a league start by scoring twice against Leicester, including an outstanding long-range effort.
But Old Trafford represents their biggest test so far.
United also have history firmly on their side.
They are unbeaten in the last eight meetings with Ipswich and have won the previous four meetings at Old Trafford. Ipswich have not won there for more than four decades.
The interesting question is therefore not simply whether Manchester United win.
It is whether they can win comfortably enough to cover the handicap.
We believe they can.

Why Manchester United -1.5 Asian Handicap Makes Sense
The outright Manchester United win is priced very short.
For us, the value begins when we move to Manchester United -1.5 at odds of 2.10.
That means United must win by at least two goals.
A 2-0, 3-0, 3-1 or 4-1 result all land the bet.
The strongest argument is United’s recent home attacking production.
Their latest six Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford have all produced Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score, according to the current market preview.
The latest-ten numbers are also much stronger than Ipswich’s.
United have a 6-2-2 record, scoring 18 goals and conceding 12.
Ipswich are 2-2-6, with 10 goals scored and 21 conceded.
Ipswich’s defensive record is the key.
They conceded four against Arsenal, three against Newcastle, three against West Ham and two against several other teams during their previous Premier League run.
Their win against Sunderland was encouraging, but one result does not erase the underlying difficulty of defending against top-level Premier League attacks.
And United should be motivated.
Losing against one promoted side is embarrassing.
Losing or dropping points against two promoted sides in consecutive weeks would immediately create pressure around Carrick and his players.
I expect a much sharper start at Old Trafford.
If United score early, Ipswich cannot simply stay in a low defensive block for the entire afternoon.
That should create additional space for Mbeumo, Cunha and Fernandes.
The visitors are dangerous enough to score – hence our 3-1 prediction – but over 90 minutes United’s attacking quality should produce enough chances for the required two-goal margin.
At 2.10, Manchester United -1.5 is our preferred value selection.

Team News
Manchester United remain without several players.
Carlos Baleba will have to wait for his debut after suffering an ankle injury before completing his move from Brighton. Carrick has said the midfielder could miss up to three weeks.
Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte are also expected to remain unavailable.
Mason Mount has returned to training following his recent issue, although his involvement still needs to be assessed, while Amad is another absentee.
Carrick could make attacking changes after the Hull defeat.
Marcus Rashford is one player pushing to start, while Kobbie Mainoo could return in midfield.
Andrey Santos should retain a major role after his summer arrival.
Bruno Fernandes is expected to play behind an attacking line containing some combination of Mbeumo, Cunha and Rashford.
Ipswich rotated heavily against Leicester in midweek.
Dara O’Shea was one of the few defenders to retain his place and should start again at Old Trafford.
Marcelino Nunez is difficult to leave out after scoring twice in the cup and is expected to feature for a third consecutive match.
Jack Clarke also has a strong argument for a start after scoring the late winner against Sunderland.
Azor Matusiwa and Florentino Luis remain unavailable.
Manchester United Possible XI
Lammens; Mazraoui, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Mainoo, Andrey Santos; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha
Ipswich Town Possible XI
Scherpen; O’Shea, Diop, Greaves, Davis; Nunez, Lukic; Clarke, Enciso, Maeda; Emersonn
Players to Watch
Bruno Fernandes
This is exactly the type of match where Fernandes should have a major influence.
United are expected to control possession, which gives their captain opportunities to receive the ball close to the Ipswich penalty area and create chances for the forwards.
After the lack of cutting edge against Hull, his final ball becomes particularly important.
Bryan Mbeumo
Mbeumo gives United pace, intelligent movement and a genuine goalscoring threat.
Ipswich may defend relatively deep early on, but if the visitors are forced to chase the game, Mbeumo should find much more space.
Matheus Cunha
Cunha’s ability to carry the ball and combine centrally adds another dimension to United’s attack.
He can move away from the centre-forward position and create overloads with Fernandes and Rashford.
Jack Clarke
Clarke could be the biggest danger to our handicap.
He produced the dramatic winner against his former club Sunderland and gives Ipswich an attacking outlet when they recover possession.
United cannot afford to leave him isolated against a defender in transition.
Head-to-Head
Manchester United have traditionally dominated this matchup at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have won the last four home meetings against Ipswich, while the Tractor Boys are without a win at Old Trafford for more than 40 years.
When Ipswich were last in the Premier League in 2024/25, the clubs produced two entertaining matches.
The game at Portman Road ended 1-1, before Manchester United won 3-2 at Old Trafford.
That latter scoreline demonstrates why Ipswich cannot simply be dismissed.
But United’s current squad should be stronger than the one involved in that season.
At home, after the embarrassment at Hull, we expect them to make their superiority count.
Final Verdict
Ipswich deserve plenty of credit.
They returned to the Premier League by beating Sunderland and then progressed in the EFL Cup with a 3-1 victory over Leicester.
Confidence should therefore be high.
But Manchester United should be viewed very differently at Old Trafford.
Carrick’s team were excellent during the final months of last season, winning six of their latest ten Premier League fixtures even after including last week’s shock defeat at Hull.
The attacking talent is there.
Mbeumo.
Cunha.
Fernandes.
Potentially Rashford.
Against an Ipswich side that conceded 21 goals across its latest ten Premier League appearances, United should generate plenty of chances.
The normal home-win price is too short.
We therefore increase the risk in exchange for a much better number.
Manchester United -1.5 Asian Handicap at odds of 2.10 is our best bet.
We expect Ipswich to contribute and make periods of the game competitive, but ultimately United should have too much attacking quality.
Our correct-score prediction is Manchester United 3-1 Ipswich Town.
