Bayern Munich Women and Manchester City Women begin their UEFA Women’s Champions League league-phase campaigns at Stadion am Sportpark, Unterhaching on Tuesday evening. It is a meeting between two domestic champions who have started the new season at a serious pace in front of goal.
Bayern are top of the Women’s Bundesliga after five straight wins, scoring 18 goals along the way. José Barcala’s side followed a 3-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen with a 5-2 victory over Köln, although those recent matches also showed that opponents can find space against Bayern when they commit bodies forward.
Manchester City arrive with three wins from three in the WSL and 11 goals scored. Their 4-2 comeback against Liverpool was another reminder of the threat carried by Lauren Hemp, Khadija Shaw and Mary Fowler, but City have conceded in every league game so far.
There is attacking quality all over this pitch and neither defence comes into the game with a clean-sheet record this season. Our prediction is 2-2, with Over 3.5 Goals at odds of 2.20 our best bet.

Match Preview
This is the first competitive meeting between Bayern Munich Women and Manchester City Women, and it looks a demanding opening test for both sides. Bayern reached last season’s Champions League semi-finals, while City return to Europe after winning the WSL and FA Cup double under Andrée Jeglertz.
Barcala’s Bayern have made an outstanding start domestically. They have won all five league games, while their last two brought eight goals: a 3-2 success at Leverkusen and the 5-2 win over Köln. The Köln match was particularly revealing. Bayern were 3-0 ahead inside 15 minutes through Jovana Damnjanović and Edna Imade’s double, then still had the depth to bring on Pernille Harder, Klara Bühl and Giulia Gwinn.
The home side’s 4-2-3-1 gives them plenty of interchange in the final third. Momoko Tanikawa and Linda Dallmann can find pockets between the lines, Bühl stretches the pitch from the left, and Harder is able to play as either a No.9 or a supporting attacker. Imade has three goals in her last two league games, while Damnjanović produced a goal and two assists against Köln. Bayern should create chances at home.
However, Bayern have conceded six goals in five Bundesliga matches. Leverkusen scored twice and Köln scored twice, with Bayern exposed by pressure and counter-attacks. That is a concern against a City team built to attack quickly once Hasegawa or Laura Blindkilde Brown wins the ball back.
City’s own start has been just as entertaining. They have scored at least three times in all three WSL games, beating Birmingham City 3-1, Aston Villa 4-1 and Liverpool 4-2. The Liverpool result was impressive because City recovered from 2-1 down, but it also continued a theme: defensive errors and turnovers have made life harder than it needed to be.
Shaw is the central reference point for City and has scored four goals in three league matches. Hemp struck twice against Liverpool, Fowler scored in the first two league games, and Beth Mead brings delivery and control from the right. With Grace Clinton, Aoba Fujino and Sam Coffey available to change the game, City have enough options to keep attacking even if Jeglertz rotates after Friday’s Liverpool match.
Both managers favour a front-foot approach and both teams have the players to punish an open game. Bayern will expect to have spells of control, but City’s pace out wide and Shaw’s movement in the box can make this a very different Champions League test from a routine Bundesliga match.

Why Over 3.5 Goals Makes Sense
Over 3.5 Goals at 2.20 needs four goals, so this is not a cautious selection. The price reflects that. But the attacking numbers on both sides make that line more appealing than a short straight match-winner price.
Bayern have scored 18 times in five league games and have recorded 29 goals across their last 10 competitive fixtures. City have also scored 29 in their last 10, including 11 in three matches this term. There is no shortage of routes to goals: Bayern have wide delivery from Bühl and Gwinn, attacking midfield runners in Tanikawa and Harder, plus Imade and Damnjanović in form. City have Hemp’s direct running, Mead’s crossing, Fowler between the lines and Shaw’s finishing.
The defensive picture matters just as much. Bayern allowed two goals to both Leverkusen and Köln in their last two matches, while City have conceded in all three WSL fixtures. City’s latest 4-2 win over Liverpool included goals conceded after a turnover and a defensive mix-up. Bayern’s aggressive positioning can also leave room behind the midfield for City to break into.
At 2.20, the over gives a better return than trying to pick a winner in a game where each team has enough attacking depth to take control for long periods. A 2-2 draw is the obvious correct-score route, but 3-1, 1-3 and 3-2 scorelines all land the bet as well.
The main risk is that a first European league-phase match becomes more measured than the domestic evidence suggests. Yet with City travelling after a 4-2 match and Bayern fresh from a 5-2 win, I expect the attacking strengths to outweigh the caution.

Team News
Bayern have several absences in defence and midfield. Lena Oberdorf is out with a reaction in her right knee, while Magdalena Eriksson and Stine Ballisager have been unavailable with knee and hamstring problems respectively. Goalkeeper Regina van Eijk is also sidelined, and Bernadette Amani’s fitness remains uncertain after she missed the Köln squad. Sarah Zadrazil has returned from a long ACL lay-off and marked her comeback period with a goal against Köln.
That leaves Ena Mahmutovic likely to continue in goal, with Vanessa Gilles and captain Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir important at centre-back. Gwinn, Bühl and Harder were held back on the bench against Köln and could return to the starting side for this European opener.
City are without Vivianne Miedema, who is still recovering from a knee injury. Rebecca Knaak has missed the opening games with an ankle issue, while Risa Shimizu remains in rehabilitation from a quad injury. Jade Rose and Alex Greenwood have therefore become the regular central-defensive pairing, and the midfield base of Hasegawa and Blindkilde Brown has started all three league fixtures.
Possible Starting Lineups
Bayern Munich Women Possible XI
Mahmutovic; Gwinn, Gilles, Viggósdóttir, Naschenweng; Zadrazil, Tanikawa; Bühl, Harder, Dallmann; Damnjanović
Manchester City Women Possible XI
Yamashita; Beney, Rose, Greenwood, Wamser; Hasegawa, Blindkilde Brown; Mead, Fowler, Hemp; Shaw
Players to Watch
Edna Imade — Bayern Munich Women
Imade scored twice against Köln and also found the net at Leverkusen. Whether she starts or comes on, her power in the penalty area gives Bayern another dangerous option alongside Damnjanović and Harder.
Momoko Tanikawa — Bayern Munich Women
Tanikawa already has three league goals and can arrive late into scoring positions from midfield. Her ability to shoot from distance gives Bayern another way through if City protect the box well.
Khadija Shaw — Manchester City Women
Shaw has scored in each of City’s three WSL matches and is in exactly the sort of form Bayern will not want to face. Her movement around the six-yard box and threat from corners can test a Bayern defence missing experienced options.
Lauren Hemp — Manchester City Women
Hemp scored twice against Liverpool and assisted Shaw at Aston Villa. Her pace on the left is particularly important if Bayern’s full-backs push high and leave room for City to counter.
Head-to-Head
Bayern Munich Women vs Manchester City Women is a first competitive meeting. There is no previous result between the clubs to lean on, although Bayern have won all six of their previous home Champions League matches against English opposition.
Final Verdict
Neither side needs much encouragement to attack. Bayern’s home form, depth around the forward line and recent scoring numbers point towards chances for the German champions, while City bring the WSL’s most in-form striker in Shaw plus Hemp, Fowler and Mead.
The strongest case for goals is that both teams are scoring freely but have recently allowed opponents too much room. Bayern can be caught in transition, and City have conceded in every league match this season. The early European context is the only real reason for caution, but Over 3.5 Goals at 2.20 still looks worth backing.
I expect an open contest with momentum swinging from one end to the other. The correct-score prediction is Bayern Munich Women 2-2 Manchester City Women.
FreeOddsTips Prediction
Bayern should have enough quality to score at least twice, but City’s pace and finishing make them more than capable of responding. With both back lines carrying injuries or recent defensive concerns, Over 3.5 Goals remains the best way to approach the match at 2.20.
