Blackburn Rovers welcome Middlesbrough to Ewood Park on Saturday afternoon in an intriguing early-season Championship clash between two clubs entering the new campaign with very different expectations.

Blackburn produced an encouraging performance in their 2-2 draw away to recently-relegated Wolves on the opening weekend, but Middlesbrough arrive as one of the Championship’s leading promotion candidates and have already won their opening two competitive matches of the season.

With Boro available at 2.30, the outright away win offers considerably more appeal than backing one of the short-priced favourites elsewhere this weekend.

Prediction Summary

Our prediction: Blackburn 0-1 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough started their competitive campaign with a 1-0 EFL Cup victory against Wrexham before beating newly-promoted Lincoln City 2-1 in their Championship opener.

That continued a broader trend of tight Middlesbrough matches. Five of their final six competitive fixtures last season produced no more than two goals, including consecutive 0-0 draws against Blackburn and Southampton.

Blackburn deserve respect after taking a point at Molineux, but Boro possess the stronger squad and have genuine ambitions of challenging for automatic promotion.

At 2.30, Middlesbrough to win looks like the value play.

Match Preview

Blackburn’s opening performance certainly deserves respect.

Tony Mowbray’s side travelled to Molineux to face a Wolves team that had just been relegated from the Premier League and were widely expected to challenge near the top of the Championship.

Rovers fell behind but responded impressively.

Sean McLoughlin equalised before Andri Gudjohnsen put Blackburn 2-1 ahead shortly after half-time, and the visitors were within touching distance of a superb opening-day victory.

Blackburn vs Middlesbrough prediction

Only a controversial stoppage-time penalty denied them.

Raúl Jiménez converted from the spot to make it 2-2, leaving Blackburn with one point rather than three.

It was nevertheless a performance that suggests Blackburn should not simply be dismissed this season.

The concern is whether they can reproduce that level consistently.

Blackburn finished down in 20th position last season and struggled badly for goals across much of the campaign. Their final home match ended in a 1-0 defeat against Leicester, while Middlesbrough finished second before ultimately missing out on Premier League promotion in the play-offs.

There was a substantial gap between these clubs across the full season.

Middlesbrough are expected to challenge again.

Indeed, Championship pre-season predictions have Boro among the leading contenders for automatic promotion, with pundits from talkSPORT even putting them forward as potential title winners.

Their start has done little to weaken that argument.

Middlesbrough opened their competitive season in the EFL Cup against Wrexham.

It was hardly spectacular, but Boro controlled enough of the contest to record a 1-0 victory and keep a clean sheet.

Then came Lincoln City in the Championship opener.

The newly-promoted visitors gave Middlesbrough a difficult afternoon at the Riverside, but Boro eventually found a way through, with summer signing Will Lankshear scoring the late winner in a 2-1 victory.

Two matches.

Two victories.

That ability to win close games could prove extremely important across a 46-match Championship season.

And tight matches have become something of a theme for Middlesbrough.

Their play-off semi-final first leg against Southampton finished 0-0. The second leg was level after 90 minutes before Southampton eventually progressed, and Boro’s play-off final against Hull ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat.

Even the previous meeting between Blackburn and Middlesbrough ended 0-0 at Ewood Park in March.

In fact, both Championship meetings last season finished goalless.

That makes another controlled, low-scoring encounter perfectly plausible.

But this time, I expect Middlesbrough to find the decisive goal.

Why Middlesbrough to Win Makes Sense

The first question is price.

I would have considerably less interest in Middlesbrough if they were trading around 1.80.

At 2.30, the equation changes.

Odds of 2.30 represent an implied probability of only around 43.5% before accounting for bookmaker margin.

For a team expected to challenge for promotion against one that finished near the bottom of the Championship last season, that immediately deserves attention.

Middlesbrough also look stronger on paper.

Transfermarkt currently values Boro’s squad at roughly €115m, compared with approximately €35.5m for Blackburn. Squad values do not decide football matches, but a difference of that magnitude illustrates the resources and individual quality available to Middlesbrough.

Their early results are another positive.

A 1-0 win against Wrexham was followed by a 2-1 victory against Lincoln.

They have therefore started the competitive season 2/2.

The defensive structure is particularly interesting for this bet.

Boro’s final six competitive matches from last season onwards include results of:

0-0 vs Blackburn
2-2 vs Wrexham
0-0 vs Southampton
1-2 vs Southampton
0-1 vs Hull
1-0 vs Wrexham

Five of those six produced three goals or fewer, while four produced two goals or fewer.

That is why 0-1 looks more attractive to me than something like 1-3.

Blackburn showed against Wolves that they can compete with strong opposition, so I do not expect Boro to dominate from the opening minute.

This could instead be a match decided by small margins.

Middlesbrough have more individual quality, greater promotion expectations and have already shown they can grind out victories.

At 2.30, I am happy to back them to do it again.

Team News

Middlesbrough enter the match with momentum after winning their first two competitive fixtures.

New signing Will Lankshear could quickly become an important attacking option after scoring the winner against Lincoln on his Championship debut for the club.

The club strengthened further during the summer, with goalkeeper Radek Vítek another notable addition as Boro attempt another promotion push.

Aidan Morris missed the Championship opener against Lincoln, so his availability is one situation worth monitoring before Saturday.

Blackburn should take confidence from their performance at Wolves.

Andri Gudjohnsen opened his Championship account at Molineux, while Sean McLoughlin also scored as Rovers caused serious problems for one of the promotion favourites.

Tony Mowbray therefore has little reason to completely change the approach that almost delivered three points.

Players to Watch

Will Lankshear

Lankshear could prove an excellent addition for Middlesbrough.

The young striker made an immediate impact by scoring the decisive goal against Lincoln and gives Boro another dangerous presence inside the penalty area.

In a match that could be decided by one chance, his finishing could prove crucial.

Middlesbrough’s Defensive Unit

This prediction is not based on Middlesbrough needing to score three or four times.

Their ability to control matches is just as important.

Boro kept Wrexham scoreless in the cup and were involved in several low-scoring matches towards the end of last season.

Another clean sheet would put the away win in an excellent position.

Andri Gudjohnsen

Gudjohnsen showed why Middlesbrough cannot underestimate Blackburn.

He scored Rovers’ second goal at Wolves and provides a physical attacking presence that Boro’s centre-backs will need to manage.

Sean McLoughlin

McLoughlin also scored at Molineux, heading Blackburn level after Wolves had taken the lead.

Set pieces could be particularly important if Blackburn struggle to create clear chances from open play.

Head-to-Head

Recent history strongly supports the idea of another close encounter.

Both Championship meetings between these teams last season finished 0-0.

Blackburn held Middlesbrough scoreless at Ewood Park in March after the reverse fixture at the Riverside had produced exactly the same result on Boxing Day.

That makes this an interesting tactical matchup.

Blackburn have repeatedly made life difficult for Middlesbrough, but Boro enter the new campaign with renewed promotion ambitions and two competitive victories already secured.

I expect another tight game — but this time with Middlesbrough edging it.

Final Verdict

Blackburn were better than many expected at Wolves.

That performance is precisely why I would not recommend aggressively backing Middlesbrough on a handicap.

But the outright price is different.

Boro finished significantly above Blackburn last season, have strengthened their squad and are again expected to challenge at the top of the Championship.

They have also begun 2026/27 with consecutive victories.

The recent head-to-head record suggests this could remain close for a long time. Both meetings last season ended 0-0, and Middlesbrough have been involved in numerous low-scoring contests over their recent competitive schedule.

This looks more like 0-1 than 0-3.

At 2.30, however, we do not need Middlesbrough to win comfortably.

We simply need them to win.

And at that price, Boro are the side I want.
