Bristol City welcome Watford to Ashton Gate on Friday night in a Championship matchup that looks much more open than the league positions might suggest.
The Robins have lost their last two matches, but the performances have not been as poor as the results. Michael Skubala’s side created plenty against both Southampton and Lincoln, and they had been in excellent attacking form before those defeats, scoring nine goals across three consecutive victories.
Watford have been inconsistent under Alessio Dionisi and arrive having lost three of their last four Championship matches. They have struggled badly away from home, but there is still enough attacking talent in the Hornets squad to cause problems.
Neither team has looked particularly convincing defensively, while recent meetings between these sides have regularly produced chances at both ends.
At 1.95, I like Over 2.5 Goals, with a 2-1 Bristol City victory our correct-score prediction.

Match Preview
Bristol City need a response.
After an encouraging start to the season, the Robins have suddenly lost two games in succession, going down 4-1 at Southampton before suffering a frustrating 1-0 home defeat against Lincoln City on Tuesday.
The results look poor, but there is more to the story.
Bristol City actually registered 11 more shots than Southampton and twice as many attempts as Lincoln, suggesting the performances were considerably better than two straight defeats might imply.
Before those losses, Bristol City had found a real attacking rhythm.
They beat Portsmouth 2-1, won 3-1 away at Preston and then produced another impressive away performance to beat Burnley 2-1.
That run is a major reason I like the goals market here.
City have already shown they can create chances consistently, and now they face a Watford side that has hardly looked secure defensively.

Watford arrive at Ashton Gate with problems of their own.
Alessio Dionisi’s side have won only two of their opening seven Championship matches, with their latest result a 2-1 home defeat against Stoke City.
That followed a 2-1 win over Preston, but before that Watford had lost successive away games against Swansea and West Brom.
Their away numbers are particularly concerning.
Watford have scored only one goal across their opening three Championship away matches, and they have not won a league game on the road since their previous visit to Ashton Gate in February.
Normally, that would make me slightly cautious about backing Over 2.5.
But Bristol City’s style should give Watford opportunities.
The Robins are creating plenty going forward but have also conceded 11 goals in seven Championship games, while they are yet to keep a league clean sheet this season. Watford have also failed to record a Championship clean sheet through seven matches.
That combination makes a 2-1 type of game very realistic.
Why Over 2.5 Goals Makes Sense
At 1.95, I think there is enough value in backing three or more goals.
Bristol City’s Championship matches are averaging more than three total goals per game, and five of their last six league fixtures have gone Over 2.5.
Their recent results tell the story:
Southampton 4-1 Bristol City
Burnley 1-2 Bristol City
Preston 1-3 Bristol City
Bristol City 2-1 Portsmouth
Birmingham 2-2 Bristol City
Four of those five produced at least three goals, with both teams scoring in all five.
Watford’s numbers are not quite as explosive, but their defence is vulnerable enough to keep us interested.
They conceded five against Peterborough in the EFL Cup, two at Swansea and two against Stoke, while both teams have scored in several of their recent matches.
The head-to-head is also interesting.
Only one of the last seven meetings between Bristol City and Watford produced a clean sheet, while the last five meetings have produced 15 total goals.
Last season alone brought:
Watford 1-1 Bristol City
Bristol City 5-1 Watford
Bristol City 1-2 Watford
That gives us 11 goals across three meetings.
I do expect Bristol City to create the greater number of chances, but Watford have enough individual quality to score one themselves.
At 1.95, Over 2.5 looks like the best way to play the matchup.

Team News
Bristol City remain without Luke McNally, who continues his recovery from a long-term knee injury.
After three matches in less than a week, Skubala could make some changes.
Dominic Ballard and Sam Greenwood are among the players pushing for starts, while Rio Cardines should keep his place after an outstanding start to the season.
Cardines already has five Championship assists, the highest total in the division heading into this round.
Watford have considerably more injury problems.
Jordan Zemura was forced off against Stoke and will miss the trip, joining a lengthy absentee list that includes Marc Bola, Jeremy Ngakia, Edoardo Bove, Kwadwo Baah and Jack Grieves.
The attacking lineup is less predictable.
Stephy Mavididi, Othmane Maama, Iker Bravo and Mamadou Doumbia started against Stoke, while Amin Nabizada strengthened his case for a starting place by scoring from the bench.
Nabizada has already scored three Championship goals in seven appearances this season.
Possible Starting Lineups
Bristol City:
Tickle; Cardines, Dickie, Eissat, Pring; Williams, Knight; Hirakawa, Ballard, Twine; Tolaj
Watford:
Ravaglia; Keben, Pollock, Coulibaly, Traore; Kayembe, Kyprianou; Maama, Bravo, Nabizada; Doumbia
Players to Watch
Lorent Tolaj — Bristol City
Tolaj has quickly become one of Bristol City’s main attacking threats.
He leads the Robins’ scoring charts and should again operate through the middle, with Twine, Ballard and Hirakawa supporting him.
Watford have looked vulnerable when opponents attack them directly, and Tolaj should get chances if Bristol City produce anything close to the shooting volume from their last two games.
Rio Cardines — Bristol City
Cardines has been one of the standout attacking full-backs in the Championship.
He already has five assists, and even in the 1-0 defeat against Lincoln he created seven chances, more than any other player on the pitch.
His deliveries from wide areas could be a major source of Bristol City opportunities.
Amin Nabizada — Watford
Nabizada is becoming increasingly difficult for Dionisi to leave out.
The teenager has scored three league goals in seven appearances and came off the bench to score against Stoke.
If Watford are going to contribute to our Over 2.5 selection, he looks one of their most interesting attacking options.
Head-to-Head
Recent meetings strongly support the idea that both teams can create chances.
The teams met three times last season:
Bristol City 1-2 Watford
Championship – February 2026
Bristol City 5-1 Watford
FA Cup – January 2026
Watford 1-1 Bristol City
Championship – November 2025
Going slightly further back, Bristol City also beat Watford 2-1 at Ashton Gate in April 2025.
Five of the last six meetings have seen both teams score, while three of those six produced Over 2.5 Goals.
Final Verdict
This looks like a good spot for goals.
Bristol City have lost twice in a row, but they are still creating a huge number of chances. Their recent attacking performances against Portsmouth, Preston and Burnley showed what they can do when the finishing clicks.
Watford are struggling, particularly away from home, but they have enough attacking talent to contribute.
The bigger issue for both teams is keeping opponents out.
Neither side has managed a Championship clean sheet this season, Bristol City’s matches are averaging more than three goals, and recent H2Hs have regularly seen both teams on the scoresheet.
I expect Bristol City to have more of the ball and create the better chances, but Watford should get opportunities as the game develops.
A 2-1 Bristol City win looks a very reasonable scoreline.
At 1.95, Over 2.5 Goals is the selection.
