Chelsea host Hull City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon in Premier League Gameweek 4. Xabi Alonso’s side have made a lively start, taking six points from three league matches, but the numbers also show why this may not be as straightforward as the home-win odds suggest.

The Blues have scored eight league goals already, with Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro giving them plenty of quality in the final third. However, Chelsea have also conceded seven times in those three games and are still waiting for their first clean sheet of the campaign.

Hull arrive unbeaten in the league after collecting seven points from their first three matches. Sergej Jakirović has built his newly promoted side around a compact 5-4-1 shape, and the Tigers have kept three successive Premier League clean sheets, including against Manchester United and Aston Villa.

Chelsea should have enough attacking class to edge the game, but Hull’s defensive record makes the away handicap appealing at the price. Our prediction is 2-1, with Hull Asian Handicap +1.5 at odds of 2.35 our best bet.

Match Preview

Chelsea have quickly become one of the division’s most entertaining teams under Alonso. Their five competitive games have produced 16 goals scored and 10 conceded, with four of those matches going over 2.5 goals. The latest was a remarkable 6-3 Carabao Cup win over Leeds United, when Chelsea recovered from a two-goal deficit after half-time.

That Leeds match needs putting in context. Alonso made nine changes from the Arsenal league defeat, and the four players introduced at the interval — Palmer, Rogers, Reece James and Pedro Neto — changed the momentum. Palmer scored twice, Neto found the net and Rogers created chances repeatedly. Chelsea’s strongest league side should look very different here.

Joao Pedro remains the focal point up front after scoring in each of Chelsea’s first two league games. Palmer and Rogers have formed an early link behind him, with Neto offering pace either from a wide attacking role or from wing-back. Romeo Lavia has also become important in midfield during Moises Caicedo’s absence, while Maxence Lacroix and Levi Colwill are expected to form part of the defensive core.

The issue for Chelsea is obvious. They have won four of five competitive matches, but have not kept a clean sheet. The 4-3 win over Brighton, the 2-1 defeat at Arsenal and the Leeds cup tie all showed a side capable of creating plenty but still allowing opponents opportunities. Alonso has used a back three and a 4-2-3-1 already, with Chelsea’s shape changing depending on personnel and game state.

Hull have approached the Premier League in almost the opposite way. Jakirović’s side have scored only three times in three league fixtures, but they have conceded none. Their 2-0 win over Manchester United, 1-0 victory at Coventry and 0-0 draw with Aston Villa have taken them to seven points and third place in the early table.

The Tigers’ 1-0 cup defeat at Sunderland in midweek ended their unbeaten competitive start, although it came with a heavily rotated XI. Their key league players were largely protected, so goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, centre-backs Semi Ajayi, John Egan and Nobel Mendy, plus midfield pair Regan Slater and Lucas Gourna-Douath, should be ready to resume the defensive job.

Hull are likely to sit in their familiar 5-4-1, keep the central areas crowded and ask Chelsea to break down two disciplined lines. Lewie Coyle and Ryan Giles will have plenty of defensive work against Chelsea’s wing-backs and wide attackers, while Belloumi and Elliot Stroud can support counter-attacks. Oli McBurnie is still waiting for his first league goal, but his pressing and physical presence can give Hull a way out when they are under pressure.

Why Hull Asian Handicap +1.5 Makes Sense

At 2.35, I prefer Hull Asian Handicap +1.5 to taking Chelsea at a short straight-win price. Hull do not need to win for this bet to land: a draw and Chelsea win by one goal is enough, while an away victory also wins. That gives us useful cover against a Chelsea side that have looked dangerous going forward but far from convincing without the ball.

Hull’s Premier League defensive start is hard to ignore. They have played 270 league minutes without conceding, and that includes a clean sheet against Manchester United on the opening weekend. Ajayi, Egan and Mendy have given Jakirović a physical central unit, while Tzolakis has made important saves when needed.

Chelsea will dominate large spells and should create chances through Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro. Yet the home side have allowed seven goals in three league games, and their open approach can leave room for Hull to counter or threaten from set pieces. Ajayi and Mendy have already scored league goals this season, so Chelsea cannot treat the visitors as a side with no threat.

The main risk is Chelsea’s attacking depth. Palmer came off the bench to score twice against Leeds, while Neto, Welbeck, Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens give Alonso different options if the game is level late on. Hull will need their back five to stay compact for long periods and must offer more than they did at Sunderland, where they managed only one shot on target.

From a betting point of view, though, the market may be underestimating how awkward Hull can be. Their clean-sheet run, disciplined league shape and Chelsea’s habit of conceding make Hull Asian Handicap +0.5 at 2.35 worth backing.

  • Hull's rotated side lost 1-0 at Sunderland in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Team News

Chelsea are expected to restore several regulars after the Leeds cup rotation. Palmer, Rogers, Joao Pedro, Lavia and Martinez should be in contention to return, while Colwill is expected to be available despite being substituted against Leeds. Caicedo remains a major doubt due to a recurring calf issue, with Chelsea expected to be cautious after his brief comeback against Brighton. Jordan Henderson is out with a wrist injury, while Emmanuel Emegha remains sidelined and Marco Palestra is still being assessed.

Hull’s Sunderland line-up was substantially changed from the team which faced Aston Villa, so Jakirović should be able to recall his usual league defence. Mendy’s half-time withdrawal in the cup was planned, rather than injury-related. Ilyas Ansah, Jack Butland, Elliot Matazo, Darko Gyabi, Charlie Hughes and Hidemasa Morita are unavailable, while Tim Iroegbunam, Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Paddy McNair were due to be assessed. Óscar Zambrano is fit again but is not in Hull’s Premier League squad.

Possible Starting Lineups

Chelsea Possible XI

Martinez; Fofana; Lacroix; Colwill; Reece James; Lavia; Barco; Hato; Palmer; Rogers; Joao Pedro

Hull Possible XI

Tzolakis; Coyle; Ajayi; Egan; Nobel Mendy; Giles; Belloumi; Slater; Gourna-Douath; Stroud; McBurnie

Players to Watch

Cole Palmer — Chelsea

Palmer’s half-time introduction transformed Chelsea’s win over Leeds, with two goals helping to turn the tie around. He is the player most likely to find space between Hull’s midfield and defensive lines, especially if the visitors drop deep.

Joao Pedro — Chelsea

Joao Pedro has made a fast start as Chelsea’s first-choice No.9, scoring in the opening two league games. Hull’s centre-backs will be physical with him, but his movement around the box and connection with Palmer and Rogers makes him Chelsea’s main scoring threat.

Konstantinos Tzolakis — Hull

Tzolakis has started all three league matches and is yet to concede in the competition. Hull will need another big performance from their goalkeeper if they are to extend that run against one of the Premier League’s most productive attacks.

Mohamed Belloumi — Hull

Belloumi has started every league game and has been Hull’s clearest creative outlet. He struck the crossbar against Aston Villa and could be important when Hull break into the space behind Chelsea’s advanced wide players.

Head-to-Head

Chelsea won the most recent meeting 4-0 away from home in the FA Cup fourth round in February 2026, with Pedro Neto scoring a hat-trick. The last Premier League meeting at Stamford Bridge was a 2-0 Chelsea win in January 2017.

Chelsea are unbeaten in all 10 Premier League meetings with Hull, recording eight wins and two draws. Hull have also never won a league away game at Chelsea, with three draws and 15 defeats from 18 visits.

Final Verdict

Chelsea are rightly favourites because Alonso has a front line full of goals, and Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro should make them far stronger than the heavily rotated side that started against Leeds. A home win is the most likely result, which is why the correct-score prediction is Chelsea 2-1 Hull.

Still, Hull’s league record deserves more respect than the market may be giving it. Jakirović’s team have kept three clean sheets from three, have enough height to compete at set pieces and can make this uncomfortable if they stay compact. Chelsea’s lack of a clean sheet and seven league goals conceded keep the case for Hull Asian Handicap +1.5 at 2.35 alive, although Chelsea’s attacking depth is the clear danger.

I expect Chelsea to have more of the ball, Hull to defend deep and the visitors to carry a threat on the break or from dead balls. The correct-score prediction is Chelsea 2-1 Hull.

FreeOddsTips Prediction

Chelsea have the stronger attackers and should create enough to score, but Hull’s early defensive work makes them a difficult opponent to dismiss. The Tigers have already shown they can frustrate better-supported Premier League teams, which keeps Hull Asian Handicap +1.5 attractive at the available price.
