Manchester United host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday in the first derby of the 2026/27 Premier League season. Michael Carrick’s side have made an uneven start, taking four points from three games, although their home performance against Ipswich showed how dangerous they can be when Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo find space.
City arrive with a perfect league record and four competitive wins under new head coach Enzo Maresca. Erling Haaland has started the campaign in sharp form, but this is still a reshaped City squad adjusting to life after Rodri and Bernardo Silva.
United have conceded six league goals already and City have looked the more settled team, but derby matches at Old Trafford rarely follow a simple form guide. Carrick has enough attacking quality to hurt City, while the visitors may be content to avoid overcommitting after their midweek trip to Porto.
The straight City win will attract plenty of support, but the draw price looks more interesting. Our prediction is 1-1, with Draw X at odds of 4.00 our best bet.

Match Preview
There has been plenty to like about United going forward, but not much room for comfort at the other end. Their opening three league matches have brought nine goals scored and six conceded. The 5-2 win over Ipswich was their best display, with Fernandes scoring a hat-trick, while the 2-2 draw at Everton last weekend was a reminder that Carrick’s team still struggle to see games out.
United led Everton twice, through Mbeumo and substitute Benjamin Šeško, but conceded a stoppage-time equaliser with the final kick. That followed the 2-0 defeat at Hull, where they found it difficult to deal with a physical start. Senne Lammens, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez and the full-backs came under pressure late on at Goodison Park, an area City will look to test.
At Old Trafford, though, United have been much more convincing in attack. They have won five of their last six competitive home matches, scoring 17 goals across that run. Fernandes remains the player who makes the side tick, with Mbeumo offering direct running from the right and Matheus Cunha dropping into useful spaces between midfield and attack. Šeško gives Carrick a more traditional penalty-box option if a late goal is needed.
City have made the stronger start on paper. Maresca has four wins from four competitive games, including a 2-0 Champions League win at Porto on Tuesday. Haaland scored both goals in Portugal and now has five goals in four competitive appearances. City controlled much of that match, producing 20 shots and 2.31 xG, but they also had a less comfortable spell after taking the lead.
Maresca’s team are still developing after a busy summer. Enzo Fernández has settled quickly in midfield, Elliot Anderson brings energy and ball-winning, while Rayan Cherki has already supplied goals and assists from advanced areas. Antoine Semenyo’s width and delivery have also given Haaland good service. The main question is how City cope when United press their new midfield unit and try to turn the match into a faster, more open contest.
City should have more of the ball, with Dias and Marc Guéhi expected to build from deep and Fernández looking for Cherki, Foden and Semenyo higher up the pitch. United do not need to dominate possession to cause problems. Fernandes can release Mbeumo and Rashford quickly, while Cunha’s movement can drag centre-backs away from the middle.
This looks like a match where City’s control meets United’s ability to strike in moments. Neither side needs to chase the game recklessly from the first whistle, and that makes a competitive draw a fair outcome at Old Trafford.

Why Draw X Makes Sense
At 4.00, Draw X is the value call rather than the obvious City win. City have won all four competitive matches under Maresca, but they have had moments of uncertainty in possession against Coventry and Porto. They are also coming into this fixture after an away Champions League tie, while a derby at Old Trafford is a different type of test from their opening games.
United’s recent results show why backing City at a short price would be difficult. Carrick’s men have scored nine times in three league outings and have real match-winners in Fernandes, Mbeumo, Cunha and Šeško. Fernandes produced a hat-trick against Ipswich and Mbeumo has scored in two of his three league appearances. If United can get runners around Dias and Guéhi quickly, they should get chances.
The draw does need United to defend better than they did at Everton. Haaland is in excellent form, and City have enough creators around him to punish another loose final 20 minutes. But City are adapting to a new manager and a rebuilt midfield without Rodri or Bernardo Silva, while United have been strong at home despite their defensive flaws.
For me, this is not a case of claiming that United are more likely to win than City. City remain the better side over the course of the season. The question is whether their win chance is big enough to dismiss a level finish at 4.00. It is not. A 1-1 draw fits a match in which City see more of the ball but United land enough attacking punches to take a point.

Team News
United have several issues to manage around their Champions League meeting with Sabah FK. Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte were unavailable before that match, with Ugarte facing a long-term cruciate-ligament absence. Amad Diallo and Carlos Baleba were also unavailable, while Luke Shaw was a doubt after missing training. Shaw’s situation matters, as Diogo Dalot could move to the left if Carrick needs to bring Noussair Mazraoui in at right-back.
Carrick has largely kept faith with the same league XI against Ipswich and Everton. Šeško made a strong case to start after his late headed goal at Goodison Park, although Cunha’s link play has been important in the recent 4-2-3-1. Leny Yoro, Patrick Dorgu, Mason Mount and Andrey Santos are among the options should the manager rotate after Europe.
For City, Matheus Nunes returned from an ankle problem and started at right-back in Porto. Nico O’Reilly was expected to be close to availability after a minor back issue, while Jeremy Doku was progressing from a calf problem but remained uncertain for the derby. Omar Marmoush is unavailable after joining Tottenham on loan. There were no confirmed domestic suspensions for either side.
Possible Starting Lineups
Manchester United Possible XI
Senne Lammens; Noussair Mazraoui; Harry Maguire; Lisandro Martínez; Diogo Dalot; Youri Tielemans; Kobbie Mainoo; Bryan Mbeumo; Bruno Fernandes; Marcus Rashford; Matheus Cunha
Manchester City Possible XI
Gianluigi Donnarumma; Matheus Nunes; Rúben Dias; Marc Guéhi; Joško Gvardiol; Elliot Anderson; Enzo Fernández; Phil Foden; Rayan Cherki; Antoine Semenyo; Erling Haaland
Players to Watch
Bruno Fernandes — Manchester United
Fernandes is United’s main creator and their biggest goal threat from midfield. His hat-trick against Ipswich showed that he can decide a match quickly, whether City give him room between the lines or concede fouls around the box.
Bryan Mbeumo — Manchester United
Mbeumo has scored in the league against Ipswich and Everton, and his direct running could be one of United’s best routes past City’s high press. He will look to attack the spaces left when Gvardiol or Nunes push forward.
Erling Haaland — Manchester City
Haaland has five goals in four competitive games and arrives after a two-goal display in Porto. United’s centre-backs will have to deal with his movement in the box, especially when Semenyo and Cherki deliver from wide or half-space positions.
Enzo Fernández — Manchester City
Fernández has made an immediate impact since joining City, assisting against Coventry and Porto. His ability to play forward early is important against a United midfield that can leave room either side of Tielemans and Mainoo.
Head-to-Head
No recent derby results are used in this prediction. The betting case is based on the two teams’ early-season form, new managerial situations and current squad changes rather than historical meetings.
Final Verdict
City’s perfect start and Haaland’s form make them worthy favourites, but the away win is not the only realistic result. Maresca’s side have had just a few weeks to settle a new midfield after major departures, and United have enough firepower to make Old Trafford uncomfortable.
United’s defensive record is the main concern for the draw, particularly after conceding twice late at Everton. Yet their home scoring record and Fernandes’s influence give them a genuine chance of responding if City take the lead. I expect City to control long spells, United to threaten in transition, and neither side to find a late winner.
At 4.00, Draw X remains the best bet. The correct-score prediction is Manchester United 1-1 Manchester City.
FreeOddsTips Prediction
City have started better, but United are capable of matching them for key moments at Old Trafford. The draw price is worth backing because City are still settling under Maresca and United have enough attacking quality to get on the scoresheet. Also see our Chelsea vs Hull prediction.
