Eastleigh welcome Southend United to the Silverlake Stadium on Wednesday night with the home side trying to respond to a damaging 4-1 defeat at Harrogate Town. Matt Gray’s team have been far stronger in Hampshire, though, taking 11 points from five unbeaten home league games.
Southend sit second after 10 matches and arrive with one of the National League’s most productive attacks. Kieron Dyer’s side have scored 25 league goals, including six in their last away match at Gateshead, but the 4-2 defeat to Barrow exposed a defence that has managed only one clean sheet.
That contrast points towards an open contest. Eastleigh have reliable home attacking options and Southend’s away league games have all seen both teams score, while the Shrimpers have the firepower to turn a fast start into an end-to-end match.
Our prediction is Eastleigh 1-3 Southend, with Over 1.5 Goals HT at odds of 2.38 our best bet.

Match Preview
Eastleigh have made an uneven start under Gray, sitting 13th with four wins, two draws and four defeats. The Harrogate result was a clear setback, particularly after Jordan Cousins had levelled from Josh Lundstram’s corner in the 25th minute. Harrogate struck early, regained the lead before the break and then pulled away late on, leaving Eastleigh with plenty to improve defensively.
Their home record offers a much better guide for this fixture. The Spitfires have won three and drawn two of their five league games at the Silverlake, scoring in every one. Aaron Blair has scored all three of his league goals at home, while Harry Sidwell found the net in each of the opening two home league fixtures. Eastleigh have also shown that they can hurt opponents from dead balls, with Lundstram’s delivery and Temi Eweka’s aerial threat particularly useful.
Gray’s side can press high at home, but they also have the pace of Blair to attack space behind a back line. Hady Ghandour has started the last two league matches after returning from injury, while the physical presence of Oli Hawkins remains an alternative if he returns to the squad. Cousins and Lundstram bring experience and energy in midfield, so Eastleigh should not simply sit off Southend.
Southend are second for good reason. Dyer has built a front-foot team and their return of 25 goals in 10 league matches is the division’s most eye-catching attacking statistic. They have scored at least twice in six of their last seven league games, with their 6-1 win at Gateshead underlining how quickly their forward players can overwhelm an opponent.
Leon Chambers-Parillon leads the way with six league goals from advanced midfield areas. Sam Austin has four after his hat-trick at Gateshead, Harry Cardwell also has four, and Promise Omochere has already scored twice since arriving in September. Darren Oldaker, captain Oli Coker and Chambers-Parillon give Southend runners and quality through the middle, while Austin, Cardwell and Omochere offer different ways of stretching Eastleigh.
The issue for Dyer is at the other end. Southend conceded four to Barrow despite having 63% possession and have conceded in nine of their 10 league fixtures. Their five away league matches have produced 21 goals in total, with both teams scoring in every one. That is why an early-goals bet makes more appeal than trying to force a match-winner price.

Why Over 1.5 Goals HT Makes Sense
At 2.38, Over 1.5 Goals HT is worth backing because neither side has approached this match like a low-event team. Southend’s five away league games have all featured BTTS, and they have scored 15 goals across those trips. Their away results include 3-1 wins at Altrincham and Solihull Moors, a 2-2 draw at Carlisle and the 6-1 demolition of Gateshead.
Eastleigh can contribute at their own ground. They have scored eight goals in five unbeaten home league matches, including a 3-2 win over Scunthorpe and a 2-1 victory against Gateshead. Blair’s movement in behind and the threat from Lundstram’s set pieces give them genuine ways to trouble a Southend defence that is without its first-choice goalkeeper Joe Duncan and defender Dan Cox.
The bet needs two first-half goals, not necessarily a goal from each side. Southend’s attacking depth gives them a strong chance of doing much of the work, but Eastleigh’s home approach means they should not be passive. An early Southend goal could open the game quickly, while an Eastleigh set piece or counter would put the line firmly in play.
The obvious risk is that Dyer reacts to the Barrow loss by making Southend more cautious, especially in the opening stages. Yet his side’s recent away matches and Eastleigh’s willingness to press at the Silverlake make 2.38 a fair price for a match that could be lively from the outset.

Team News
Eastleigh are still without injured right-back Nick Akoto, while goalkeeper Nick Townsend has missed the last three league matches after suffering an injury in the warm-up before Boreham Wood. Josh Jeffries has deputised in goal and is likely to continue. Ghandour is back from injury and has started the last two league games, while Will Randall has also returned to action. Nelson Khumbeni was absent from the Harrogate squad after coming off early at Sutton, and Hawkins was also absent at Harrogate.
Southend are expected to remain without Joe Duncan and Dan Cox because of Wales Under-21 duty. Jack Sims started in goal and Rayan Oyebade came into defence against Barrow. Cardwell was an unused substitute in that match after his productive recent spell, so he is a strong candidate to return to the front line. Ryan Colclough, Sahid Kamara and Lewys Twamley give Dyer further attacking options from the bench.
Possible Starting Lineups
Eastleigh Possible XI
Josh Jeffries; Jake Caprice; Temi Eweka; Tommy Dobson-Ventura; Reece Johnson; Harry Sidwell; Josh Lundstram; Jordan Cousins; Dion Rankine; Aaron Blair; Hady Ghandour
Southend Possible XI

Players to Watch
Aaron Blair — Eastleigh
Blair is Eastleigh’s main home threat, with all three of his league goals this season arriving at the Silverlake. His runs beyond the front line can test a Southend back four that has struggled to keep clean sheets.
Josh Lundstram — Eastleigh
Lundstram has already scored, assisted and created from set pieces this season. His delivery matters against a Southend side missing Cox and still searching for greater defensive control.
Leon Chambers-Parillon — Southend
Southend’s leading scorer has six league goals and arrives after scoring in the loss to Barrow. His late runs from midfield are difficult to track and make him a threat even when Southend’s centre-forwards are closely marked.
Sam Austin — Southend
Austin’s hat-trick at Gateshead showed his finishing quality, and he can attack from a wide starting position or move inside. His speed is well suited to a match where Eastleigh may press and leave room behind them.
Head-to-Head
Southend lead the competitive head-to-head record with seven wins from 11 meetings, compared with three Eastleigh victories and one draw. The most recent meeting was a 4-1 Southend win in January 2026, although Eastleigh won the latest game at the Silverlake Stadium, beating Southend 2-1 in September 2025.
The recent meetings at Eastleigh have been closely fought. Southend’s record there is three wins, one draw and two defeats from six listed competitive visits, so home advantage has not made this a straightforward fixture for either team.
Final Verdict
Southend have the stronger attacking group and their unbeaten away league record deserves respect, but their defensive problems keep Eastleigh firmly involved. The Spitfires are unbeaten at home in the league and have enough pace, set-piece quality and forward options to create chances.
Rather than rely on Southend to win, I prefer to focus on the likelihood of an open start. Southend’s away games have been consistently high-scoring, and the absences of Duncan and Cox do not help a defence that has already conceded 16 times. The main risk is a more restrained Southend response after Barrow, but Over 1.5 Goals HT at 2.38 still looks the value play. The correct-score prediction is Eastleigh 1-3 Southend.
FreeOddsTips Prediction
Southend should carry the greater attacking threat, with Chambers-Parillon, Austin, Cardwell and Omochere giving Dyer several routes to goal. Eastleigh’s unbeaten home record and Blair’s scoring record at the Silverlake suggest they can play their part, which keeps the first-half goals line attractive.
