Hull City welcome Aston Villa to the MKM Stadium after making a perfect start to their return to the Premier League. Sergej Jakirović’s side have beaten Manchester United 2-0 and Coventry City 1-0, keeping a clean sheet in both matches.
Villa arrive in very different form. Unai Emery’s rebuilt team have lost their opening two league games, conceding four at Brighton before a much-improved performance ended in a 1-0 home defeat against Arsenal. They are still waiting for their first Premier League goal and shot on target of the season.
The summer business is central to this match. Hull made 18 signings and already look comfortable in Jakirović’s 5-4-1 system. Villa added Nicolas Jackson, Zion Suzuki, Leon Goretzka and several talented younger players, but they also lost major figures including Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martínez.
Villa have the talent to improve, but Hull look settled, organised and dangerous on the break. Our prediction is 2-1, with Hull Asian Handicap +0.5 at odds of 2.10 our best bet.

Match Preview
Hull could hardly have asked for a better return to the top flight. The Tigers followed their play-off final victory over Middlesbrough with two league wins, and they have now recorded four clean sheets in their last five competitive matches.
Their football has been practical rather than spectacular. Jakirović has used a back three of Semi Ajayi, John Egan and Nobel Mendy, with Lewie Coyle and Ryan Giles dropping alongside them when Hull defend. Regan Slater works aggressively in midfield, while Mohamed Belloumi and Elliot Stroud are expected to recover into a compact four before breaking forward.
That shape has suited Hull. They do not need long spells of possession to cause problems and have shown that they are comfortable waiting for the right moment. Ajayi and Mendy scored in the win over Manchester United, while the decisive move at Coventry came from a turnover and quick counterattack, with Belloumi releasing Liam Millar for the winner.
Millar has since joined Birmingham City on loan, but Hull have added more speed and competition through Mohamed-Ali Cho, Ilyas Ansah, Robinio Vaz and Sorba Thomas. Oli McBurnie remains the central reference. He can hold up direct passes, compete with Villa’s centre-backs and create space for runners from midfield.
Aston Villa’s opening results have exposed the difficulty of changing so much of a successful team at once. The side that finished fourth and won the Europa League last season was built around players such as Watkins, Rogers, Tielemans, Konsa and Martínez. All five have now left.
Emery is rebuilding around a new spine. Suzuki has taken over in goal, Victor Lindelöf and Pau Torres started together against Arsenal, Boubacar Kamara is screening the defence and Nicolas Jackson has replaced Watkins as the main striker. Emiliano Buendía remains the established creator, with John McGinn able to move inside from the right.
Villa were far better defensively against Arsenal than they had been in the 4-0 defeat at Brighton. Suzuki made several good saves and Buendía struck the crossbar, but they again failed to produce a shot on target. Alejandro Garnacho could be brought into the XI at Hull to provide more pace and natural width.
This is therefore an awkward matchup for Villa. Hull are happy to defend deep, compete for second balls and attack the space left behind the opposition. Emery’s team may control possession, but they must show much more imagination around the penalty area to break down a side that has conceded only once in its last six competitive fixtures.

Why Hull Asian Handicap +0.5 Makes Sense
This bet is straightforward: Hull do not need to win. A home victory or draw lands the selection, while the bet loses only if Aston Villa leave the MKM Stadium with all three points.
At 2.10, that looks generous given the contrast between the teams’ opening performances. Hull have won both Premier League matches without conceding and are unbeaten in their last six competitive home games. Villa have lost three consecutive matches in all competitions and are yet to score in the league.
The tactical matchup also helps. Villa are still learning how to build attacks without Tielemans, Rogers and Watkins. Kamara and Ross Barkley can circulate possession, but Hull will be comfortable allowing them to have the ball in less dangerous areas. The important spaces will be around McBurnie and behind Villa’s full-backs when Hull win it back.
Hull’s back three should also be well suited to dealing with a conventional centre-forward. Jackson is quick and can run into the channels, but Ajayi, Egan and Mendy give the Tigers strength in the box. Tzolakis has been reliable behind them, keeping clean sheets in both of his Premier League appearances.
Villa’s strongest argument is the number of talented players Emery can introduce. Garnacho, Tammy Abraham, Ibrahim Mbaye and potentially Goretzka give him options if the first plan does not work. The visitors also showed against Arsenal that they can defend with far more discipline than they did at Brighton.
That is the main risk. Villa are capable of improving quickly under a manager of Emery’s quality, and one moment from Buendía, Jackson or Garnacho could change the game.
However, the market is asking Villa to win away against a confident and well-organised opponent. From a betting point of view, I would rather take Hull +0.5 at 2.10 and have the draw covered than rely on Villa’s new team suddenly clicking.
- ✓Hull have won both Premier League matches without conceding
- ✓Hull are unbeaten in their last six competitive home games
- ✓Hull have conceded only once in their last six competitive fixtures
- ✓Aston Villa have lost their opening two league matches without scoring
- ✓Villa have not registered a shot on target in the Premier League this season
- ✓Hull +0.5 wins with either a home victory or a draw
- ✓Three of the last five meetings between the teams ended level
Team News
Hull remain without Jack Butland, Charlie Hughes, Eliot Matazo, Darko Gyabi and Óscar Zambrano. Hidemasa Morita is also expected to miss out after being replaced at half-time against Coventry.
Joe Gelhardt has returned to full training and could be included, while Matt Crooks will be assessed following a quad problem. Nobel Mendy has been cleared of a new injury, and captain Lewie Coyle is expected to be available after suffering a dead leg.
Lucas Gourna-Douath is the likely replacement for Morita in midfield. Several deadline-day arrivals, including Tim Iroegbunam, Christos Mouzakitis, Brooke Norton-Cuffy, Sorba Thomas, Ansah and Vaz, could be added to the matchday squad.
Aston Villa will be without the suspended João Gomes. Amadou Onana and Johan Manzambi are sidelined with knee injuries, while young forward Brian Madjo is unavailable because of an ankle problem.
Goretzka could make his debut, although his readiness to start is uncertain. Suzuki and Jackson should retain their places, with Garnacho pushing to replace George Hemmings on the left. Harwood-Bellis, Mbaye and Aaron Wan-Bissaka provide further options from the bench.
Possible Starting Lineups
Hull Possible XI
Konstantinos Tzolakis; Lewie Coyle; Semi Ajayi; John Egan; Nobel Mendy; Ryan Giles; Mohamed Belloumi; Regan Slater; Lucas Gourna-Douath; Elliot Stroud; Oli McBurnie
Aston Villa Possible XI
Zion Suzuki; Matty Cash; Victor Lindelöf; Pau Torres; Ian Maatsen; Boubacar Kamara; Ross Barkley; John McGinn; Emiliano Buendía; Alejandro Garnacho; Nicolas Jackson
Players to Watch
Mohamed Belloumi — Hull
Belloumi created Hull’s winner at Coventry with an excellent outside-of-the-foot pass. His speed and ability to carry the ball could be especially dangerous if Maatsen pushes forward and leaves space on Villa’s left.
Konstantinos Tzolakis — Hull
Tzolakis has started his Premier League career with two clean sheets. Villa should have more of the ball, so his handling, positioning and decision-making when crosses enter the box may be important again.
Emiliano Buendía — Aston Villa
Buendía produced Villa’s best attempt against Arsenal when he struck the crossbar. He is the player most likely to find space between Hull’s midfield and defence, where one clever pass could release Jackson.
Alejandro Garnacho — Aston Villa
Villa lacked width in their latest starting XI, making Garnacho a strong candidate to come in. His direct running can force Hull’s wing-backs deeper and give the visitors a much-needed threat in one-against-one situations.
Head-to-Head
The most recent meeting finished Aston Villa 2-2 Hull in the Championship in January 2019. Villa won 3-1 at the MKM Stadium earlier that season, while the previous meeting at Hull ended 0-0 in March 2018.
The last five meetings have produced one win for each team and three draws. Those matches are too old to carry major weight given the changes at both clubs, but the number of draws adds some support to a +0.5 handicap that covers another shared result.
Final Verdict
Aston Villa still have plenty of talent, and their improved defensive display against Arsenal suggests the Brighton defeat should not define them. Emery now has genuine pace available through Garnacho and Mbaye, with Jackson and Abraham competing for the central role.
But Hull are further ahead as a team. Jakirović has found a shape that suits his players, the back three are defending the box well and Belloumi gives them a clear counter-attacking threat. Confidence at the MKM Stadium should be high after the win over Manchester United.
The danger is that Villa’s new attack begins to settle and punishes Hull for defending too passively. Even so, asking the visitors to win this match looks demanding when they have not scored or registered a shot on target in two league games.
At 2.10, Hull Asian Handicap +0.5 remains our best bet because the draw is covered. I expect a competitive game in which Villa have possession but Hull create the clearer chances on the break, with a 2-1 home victory the correct-score prediction.
FreeOddsTips Prediction
Hull have started the season with more confidence, balance and defensive discipline than Villa. The visitors should improve, but the Tigers are capable of staying unbeaten and may have enough pace on the counterattack to take all three points.
