Schalke 04 return to the VELTINS-Arena for their first Bundesliga home match in more than three years, with defending champions Bayern Munich providing the opposition on Saturday evening.
Miron Muslic’s side lost 3-0 at Augsburg on the opening weekend, but the scoreline does not tell the full story. Schalke created several good first-half chances before Ron Schallenberg’s second-half red card changed the game and allowed Augsburg to pull clear.
Bayern have started with three straight wins, scoring 11 goals against Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart and Osnabrück. Vincent Kompany’s team are clearly the stronger side, but they arrive fewer than 72 hours after a Wednesday cup tie and face what should be an electric home crowd in Gelsenkirchen.
Our prediction is Schalke 04 1-2 Bayern Munich, with Schalke 04 Asian Handicap +1.5 at odds of 2.75 our best bet.

Match Preview
Schalke’s Bundesliga return began with a heavy defeat, yet there were enough encouraging moments at Augsburg to suggest they can be more competitive than the final score indicates. Moussa Sylla rounded goalkeeper Finn Dahmen after six minutes, only for his effort to be cleared off the line, while Schallenberg, Dejan Ljubičić and Adil Aouchiche also had openings.
The problem was finishing. Schalke failed to take their chances, fell behind and eventually became too stretched after Schallenberg was dismissed in the 62nd minute. Loris Karius finished with ten saves as Augsburg added two late goals.
Muslic is unlikely to abandon the aggressive approach that brought Schalke the 2025/26 second-division title. They conceded only 31 goals in 34 league matches during that promotion campaign, and their pressing, quick forward passing and willingness to attack should be much more effective with the VELTINS-Arena crowd behind them.
The midfield will need an adjustment because Schallenberg is suspended. Satoshi Tanaka has been confirmed as his replacement and is likely to partner the energetic Soufiane El-Faouzi. Ahead of them, Aouchiche can find space between the lines, Ljubičić makes useful forward runs and Sylla offers the pace to attack Bayern’s high defensive line. Edin Džeko gives Schalke a very different option if they need a physical presence in the box.
Bayern arrive in outstanding scoring form. They followed a 5-1 Bundesliga win over Stuttgart with a 4-1 cup victory at Osnabrück, recovering calmly after conceding in the fifth minute. Harry Kane scored twice, Michael Olise added another and Tom Bischof found the net after Luis Díaz’s shot was saved.
Kompany’s attack is difficult to contain because Kane does not stay between the centre-backs. He drops towards midfield, which can pull defenders out and create space for Olise, Díaz and the central attacking midfielder. Joshua Kimmich controls the deeper areas, while Aleksandar Pavlović can carry the ball forward and support Bayern’s counter-press.
There is little doubt Bayern should control possession and create chances. The more important question for bettors is whether they win by at least two goals. Schalke are unbeaten in 14 competitive home matches, while Bayern have conceded in each of their first three games this season. That makes the home handicap more attractive than the match-winner market.

Why Schalke 04 Asian Handicap +1.5 Makes Sense
This selection is about the winning margin rather than arguing that Schalke are the better team.
Schalke 04 Asian Handicap +1.5 wins if Schalke win, draw or lose by exactly one goal. A 0-1 or 1-2 Bayern victory would therefore land the bet. We only lose if Bayern win by two or more.
At odds of 2.75, that is an interesting position. Bayern have won their opening three competitive games and are capable of pulling any defence apart, but this is a difficult scheduling spot. They played away to Osnabrück on Wednesday and return to Champions League action against Bodø/Glimt five days after this match.
Kompany can rotate without dramatically weakening his side, although the short turnaround may still affect the intensity of Bayern’s press. Schalke must be ready to play through the first wave and use Sylla’s pace when Bayern leave space behind their back four.
The atmosphere should also matter. This is Schalke’s first Bundesliga home game for more than three years, and Muslic’s team are unlikely to lack energy. Their 14-match unbeaten competitive home run shows how difficult they have been to beat in Gelsenkirchen.
Schalke do not need to dominate. They need to stay compact, avoid the gaps that appeared late at Augsburg and take one of the chances that comes their way. Karius may also need another busy evening, but his performance last weekend showed that he can keep Schalke in the match.
The main risk is obvious. Bayern have scored at least four goals in five of their last ten competitive games, and Schalke allowed too many shots at Augsburg. If Kane, Olise and Díaz find an early rhythm, the handicap will be under serious pressure.
Even so, Bayern winning narrowly is a realistic outcome. At 2.75, backing Schalke to stay within one goal looks better value than taking another short Bayern victory.

Team News
Schalke will be without Ron Schallenberg, who begins a two-match suspension following his red card at Augsburg. Muslic has confirmed that summer signing Satoshi Tanaka will replace him in central midfield.
Captain Kenan Karaman is doubtful after a limited training workload, while Adrian Gantenbein, Emil Højlund and Bryan Lasme are unavailable. Deadline-day arrival Hee Chan Hwang has completed his first team training session, but a late decision will be made on his involvement.
Robin Gosens, Maximilian Wöber and Junior Dina Ebimbe are available after completing full training. Gosens could replace Vitalie Becker at left wing-back, while Džeko is expected to receive playing time as he continues building his fitness.
Bayern have no suspension concerns. Jamal Musiala has returned to team training but has not featured in the opening three competitive matches, so he may again be managed carefully. Serge Gnabry remains doubtful and is unlikely to play a major role while he continues his recovery from an adductor injury.
Manuel Neuer, Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies and Pavlović could return after Kompany rotated his team for the cup win at Osnabrück. Kane, Olise and Díaz remain the likely first-choice attacking three.
Possible Starting Lineups
Schalke 04 Possible XI

Players to Watch
Moussa Sylla — Schalke 04
Sylla’s direct running gives Schalke their clearest way of testing Bayern’s high line. He came close to scoring early at Augsburg and must be ready to attack quickly when Schalke win the ball back.
Loris Karius — Schalke 04
Karius made ten saves on the opening weekend. Schalke need to reduce his workload, but another strong goalkeeping performance could be central to keeping the score within one goal.
Michael Olise — Bayern Munich
Olise has scored against Dortmund, Stuttgart and Osnabrück this season. His movement inside from the right will test Schalke’s left-sided defenders and could create shooting chances around the edge of the box.
Harry Kane — Bayern Munich
Kane enters the match after scoring twice in the DFB Cup. His finishing is the obvious danger, but his ability to drop away from the centre-backs and bring runners into play may be an even bigger tactical problem for Schalke.
Head-to-Head
Bayern have dominated this fixture, winning the last 12 competitive meetings and remaining unbeaten in the previous 25. They have also kept seven consecutive clean sheets against Schalke.
The most recent encounter finished Bayern Munich 6-0 Schalke 04 in May 2023. Bayern also won the last two meetings at the VELTINS-Arena, recording a 2-0 victory in November 2022 and a 4-0 win in January 2021.
Those results show the danger attached to the home handicap, although this is a new Schalke side under Muslic and their current home form is much stronger than it was before relegation.
Final Verdict
Bayern are deserved favourites and should have enough quality to win, particularly with Kane, Olise and Díaz supported by Kimmich in midfield.
That does not automatically make a comfortable away victory good value.
Schalke were competitive at Augsburg before the sending-off, have gone 14 competitive home matches without defeat and should receive an enormous lift from the crowd. Their best chance is to press bravely without allowing the midfield and defensive lines to become separated.
Bayern’s attack is the main risk, especially if Schalke concede early. However, Kompany’s side have allowed a goal in all three competitive games this season and must deal with a short turnaround after Wednesday’s cup tie.
I expect Bayern to control most of the ball, with Schalke threatening through quick breaks and set pieces. At odds of 2.75, Schalke 04 Asian Handicap +1.5 is worth backing, with a narrow 1-2 away win the correct-score prediction.
FreeOddsTips Prediction
Bayern should create enough chances to take the three points, but Schalke’s home record, the occasion and the visitors’ schedule can keep the final margin respectable. The +1.5 handicap allows us to back that view without requiring Schalke to avoid defeat.
