Abate has made the back three central to Torino’s early work. He has used variations of 3-4-2-1, 3-4-1-2 and 3-5-1-1, but the basic idea has remained the same: protect the middle with three centre-backs, use the wing-backs to get forward and give Nikola Vlašić freedom around the strikers.
The win in Florence showed what Torino can offer when they stay in the game. They trailed early in the second half, yet Mandragora scored against his former club before Adams finished Rafik Belghali’s cross in the 82nd minute. Mandragora’s arrival has quickly strengthened the midfield alongside Kian Fitz-Jim and Gvidas Gineitis. The home side have conceded in all three Serie A games, so a clean sheet against Roma would be a surprise, but they have enough going forward to land a blow of their own.
Roma have started brilliantly under Gasperini. Donyell Malen has five Serie A goals in three matches, including a hat-trick against Fiorentina and a brace at Lecce. Paulo Dybala supplied all three assists in that Fiorentina victory, while Matías Soulé and Rodrigo Mora have also made early contributions.
Gasperini’s 3-4-2-1 mirrors Torino’s shape in many ways. Roma push their wing-backs high, ask Bryan Cristante and Manu Koné to cover ground in midfield, and use the narrow attacking players to create room for Malen. That said, the Fenerbahçe draw offered a reminder that Roma are not untouchable. Torino will assess Saúl Coco after the centre-back suffered a tibia contusion against Fiorentina. Ardian Ismajli replaced him in that match and is the likely deputy if Coco is not passed fit. Cesare Casadei is not expected to be ready following his muscular issue, while Franco Israel and Pietro Pellegri are also being assessed.
Lucas Perri should continue in goal after starting the last two matches.
