West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers meet at the London Stadium on Tuesday night in an intriguing battle between two clubs attempting to bounce straight back to the Premier League.

The early evidence suggests they are adapting to Championship football very differently. West Ham remain without a league victory after three rounds, collecting only two points, while Wolves have taken seven points from nine and arrive in East London as one of the division’s early pace-setters.

However, this is a different type of test for Wolves. West Ham still possess plenty of individual quality, and with Nuno Espirito Santo under increasing pressure to deliver a first Championship victory, I expect a much tighter contest than the visitors’ recent high-scoring results suggest.

Our best bet is Under 2.5 Goals at odds of 2.20, with a 1-1 draw my correct-score prediction.

Match Preview

West Ham’s return to the Championship has been considerably more difficult than expected.

After suffering relegation from the Premier League on the final day of last season, the Hammers retained Nuno Espirito Santo and entered the new campaign among the obvious promotion candidates.

Three league games later, they are still waiting for their first victory.

West Ham opened with a 2-2 draw at Burnley after surrendering a two-goal advantage, before losing 2-1 at home to Charlton. Saturday’s trip to Watford brought another frustrating result, as the Hammers were held to a 1-1 draw despite applying plenty of pressure.

There have at least been encouraging signs in the EFL Cup. West Ham beat Portsmouth 3-1 before producing an impressive 4-1 away victory over Southampton, showing that this squad is still capable of producing strong attacking performances.

West Ham’s biggest challenge is finding consistency following a difficult summer. Crysencio Summerville and Mateus Fernandes were among the significant departures, although retaining captain Jarrod Bowen provides Nuno with a genuine match-winner at Championship level.

Joel Piroe also gives West Ham another interesting attacking option. The Leeds loanee scored on his debut and could return to the starting XI after beginning the Watford match on the bench.

Wolves arrive in much better shape.

Cesar Peixoto’s team are unbeaten through their opening five competitive matches, winning four and drawing one.

A 2-2 draw against Blackburn on the opening weekend was followed by an impressive 3-1 victory at Preston, before Wolves dismantled Stoke 4-1 at the weekend.

They have also beaten Port Vale 3-0 and Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 in the EFL Cup.

The numbers are impressive. Wolves have already scored nine Championship goals in three matches, making them the division’s leading scorers at this early stage.

Raul Jimenez, Fer Lopez and Rodrigo Gomes have each scored twice in the league, giving Peixoto several attacking threats rather than one obvious source of goals.

However, there is one important difference between their Championship and cup performances: Wolves are yet to keep a league clean sheet.

That gives West Ham a route into the game, particularly at the London Stadium.

👑 Our Best Bet
🛡 High Confidence
Under 2.5 Goals
West Ham are still searching for their first Championship victory and should prioritise defensive control against an in-form Wolves side. With Wolves also facing their toughest league test so far, a tighter contest looks likely at the London Stadium.

Why Under 2.5 Goals Makes Sense

Wolves’ recent scorelines immediately make an Under 2.5 selection look slightly aggressive, but I think the circumstances surrounding this particular match are important.

West Ham desperately need a result.

After failing to win any of their first three league matches, another chaotic end-to-end contest is unlikely to be Nuno’s preferred approach against an in-form Wolves side.

The Hammers should be more cautious defensively, particularly knowing how dangerous Wolves have been when matches become open.

Wolves, meanwhile, do not need to force the issue.

Seven points from nine represents an excellent start, and taking something from the London Stadium would maintain their momentum.

There is also plenty of familiarity between these sides following their time together in the Premier League, and West Ham comprehensively won their most recent meeting 4-0.

I expect both teams to respect the threat posed by the opposition, particularly during the opening hour.

At 2.20, Under 2.5 Goals offers enough value for a game I see developing into a tactical and relatively tight contest.

Team News

West Ham came through their weekend draw at Watford without any significant new injury concerns.

Joel Piroe is pushing for a return to the starting XI after starting on the bench at Vicarage Road. His ability to play around the striker could give Nuno another solution in the final third.

Tomas Soucek remains unavailable with a thigh injury and will have to wait to make his 300th league appearance for the club.

Jarrod Bowen should again be one of West Ham’s main attacking threats, while Taty Castellanos is expected to lead the line.

Wolves also emerged from their emphatic 4-1 victory over Stoke without any fresh injury problems.

Peixoto therefore has little reason to make major changes.

Raul Jimenez, Rodrigo Gomes and Fer Lopez have each scored twice in the Championship this season and should retain prominent attacking roles.

Jordan James is pushing for his first league start after coming off the bench to score against Stoke.

Possible Starting Lineups

West Ham:
Hermansen; Veltman, Golambeckis, Kilman, Walker-Peters; Bowen, Engels, Kante, Solomon; Piroe; Castellanos

Wolves:
Jose Sa; Tchatchoua, Djiga, Toti Gomes, Bueno; Andre, James; Rodrigo Gomes, Fer Lopez, Mane; Jimenez

Players to Watch

Jarrod Bowen remains West Ham’s most important attacking player. The Hammers managed to keep their captain following relegation, and his Premier League quality could prove decisive in tight Championship matches.

For Wolves, Raul Jimenez has made an encouraging start with two league goals. The experienced striker knows the London Stadium well and gives Wolves a reliable focal point in an attack that has already scored nine times.

Head-to-Head

These clubs require little introduction after being Premier League opponents before suffering relegation together last season.

The most recent meeting was emphatic, with West Ham beating Wolves 4-0.

That result should also serve as a reminder that Wolves’ excellent start does not automatically make them comfortable favourites on Tuesday.

West Ham’s current league form is poor, but the Hammers still possess a squad capable of competing with the Championship’s strongest teams.

Final Verdict

Everything about recent form points towards Wolves.

They are unbeaten in five competitive games, have won four of them and have scored nine times across their opening three Championship fixtures.

But I do not expect another free-flowing Wolves game at the London Stadium.

West Ham are under pressure to register their first league victory and Nuno knows Wolves extremely well. After conceding five goals across their opening three Championship matches, defensive control should be a priority.

The visitors should also be satisfied with avoiding defeat in one of their more difficult away fixtures.

I therefore expect a cautious opening followed by a more competitive second half, but not enough sustained attacking freedom to turn this into another Wolves goal-fest.

Under 2.5 Goals at 2.20 is the selection.

Our correct-score prediction is West Ham 1-1 Wolves.
