Birmingham Legion welcome Brooklyn FC to Protective Stadium on Wednesday morning, with both sides arriving off eventful weekend matches and carrying major defensive concerns.
Birmingham were beaten 4-0 at Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday, yet the scoreline did not tell the full story. Jay Heaps’ side still managed 17 shots and 1.65 expected goals, while their recent run has been full of open games. Legion have scored 18 and conceded 25 across their last 10 competitive fixtures.
Brooklyn drew 2-2 with FC Tulsa after recovering from two goals down with 10 men. That comeback showed character, but it also came after another difficult defensive afternoon and leaves Marlon LeBlanc’s squad with a quick turnaround following their fourth match in 11 days.
The early-goals market makes most appeal. Birmingham’s attacking options should find room against a Brooklyn defence that has conceded 13 goals in its last four away league games, while Birmingham’s own makeshift back line has struggled badly to keep teams out. Our prediction is 1-1, with Over 1.5 Goals HT at odds of 2.20 our best bet.

Match Preview
Birmingham have become one of the more unpredictable teams in the USL Championship. Their last five matches have produced scorelines of 0-4, 4-4, 2-2, 2-2 and 2-3, which says plenty about a side capable of creating chances but unable to close games down. The 4-4 draw against New Mexico United and 2-2 draw with Charleston Battery were entertaining, but neither result helped a defence which has now gone six games without a clean sheet.
Heaps has generally used a 4-2-3-1, with Peter-Lee Vassell operating behind the striker and Samuel Shashoua and Serge Ngoma providing width. Shashoua created three chances at Tampa Bay, while Vassell had 68 touches and remains important in linking midfield to attack. Romario Williams is Birmingham’s leading league scorer with seven goals, and Ronaldo Damus has five after scoring twice against New Mexico. Tyler Pasher gives them another goal threat, having also scored five league goals.
The issue is at the other end. Birmingham started nominal forward Sebastian Tregarthen at right-back and midfielder Kadeem Cole at centre-back in St Petersburg, which underlined the lack of a settled defensive unit. AJ Paterson’s own goal opened the scoring there before Tampa Bay pulled away. Returning home should help Legion, who have scored in each of their last five home fixtures, but there is little evidence that they can make this a quiet game.
Brooklyn have had a hard first season in the Championship, with just four league wins from 25 matches, but they did show fight against Tulsa. Gabriel Alves was sent off in the 17th minute, Brooklyn fell 2-0 behind, then Abdoulaye Kanté and Tommy McNamara rescued a point. Kanté’s return from injury gives LeBlanc another mobile option through the middle, while McNamara brings experience and composure from midfield.
LeBlanc’s team usually line up in a 4-2-3-1 and try to be positive in possession, with CJ Olney Jr. carrying much of the creative load. Olney leads Brooklyn with 36 chances created and set up Kanté against Tulsa. Peter Mangione can arrive late into dangerous areas, while Anthony Fontana has started the last two league games since joining in September. Brooklyn lost leading scorer Markus Anderson when Philadelphia Union recalled him, so the likes of Kanté, Stefan Stojanovic and Juan Carlos Obregón Jr. need to share the goals.
The travel and defensive record are the concern. Brooklyn have won only once in 12 away league matches and conceded 32 goals on their travels. Their latest four away league games have brought 13 goals conceded, including defeats of 5-0 at Charleston and 4-0 at Indy Eleven. That is why Birmingham should get opportunities early, although Legion’s own defensive problems give Brooklyn a real route to scoring too.

Why Over 1.5 Goals HT Makes Sense
Over 1.5 Goals HT needs two goals before the interval, and the price of 2.20 is worth considering because this is not a match between two reliable defences. Birmingham have conceded 15 times across their last five competitive fixtures, while Brooklyn have let in 13 goals in their previous four away league games.
There is enough attacking quality on each side to punish those weaknesses. Williams, Damus, Pasher, Vassell and Shashoua give Birmingham several ways of getting at a stretched opponent. The home side created 17 shots even in the 4-0 loss at Tampa Bay, so it would be wrong to treat that result as a complete attacking failure.
Brooklyn should not be written off as passengers. Olney’s ability to find runners, Kanté’s movement after his return and Mangione’s attacking midfield runs can trouble Birmingham’s unsettled back four. Brooklyn’s 2-2 draw with Tulsa also showed that they can keep attacking when the match becomes chaotic.
The main risk is that the quick turnaround persuades Brooklyn to begin cautiously after their exhausting 10-man effort against Tulsa. Even so, Birmingham’s need to respond after Tampa Bay and both teams’ recent defensive records point towards an open start. At 2.20, two first-half goals is a better price than relying on either inconsistent side to win outright.

Team News
Birmingham’s defensive selection is worth watching. Paterson, Amir Daley, Cole and Phanuel Kavita have international call-ups during this window, with Daley facing a direct scheduling clash on the day of this fixture. There are no confirmed Birmingham injuries or suspensions in the latest information, but recent use of Tregarthen and Cole out of their usual positions suggests Heaps may again need to be flexible.
Williams replaced Damus during the second half against Tampa Bay and has a strong case to lead the line after his recent scoring run. Damus remains a genuine alternative, while McCartney, Diarbian and Pasher give Birmingham more attacking options if Heaps changes the front four.
Brooklyn’s biggest concern is Gabriel Alves, who was sent off against FC Tulsa. The club had not confirmed the disciplinary outcome ahead of this game, but he is a serious doubt to feature. Kanté returned from injury and scored at the weekend, so he should be available, while Anderson is no longer an option following his recall by Philadelphia Union. LeBlanc was also dismissed against Tulsa, although there was no confirmed update on a touchline suspension.
Possible Starting Lineups
Birmingham Possible XI

Brooklyn Possible XI

Players to Watch
Romario Williams — Birmingham
Williams leads Birmingham’s league scoring with seven goals and offers a more direct threat than most of the home forwards. If he starts after his substitute appearance at Tampa Bay, Brooklyn’s centre-backs will have to deal with his movement in the box from the opening minutes.
Samuel Shashoua — Birmingham
Shashoua is Birmingham’s main wide creator at present. He made three chances against Tampa Bay and can exploit the space behind Brooklyn’s full-backs, particularly if Legion push Nico Brown high on the left.
CJ Olney Jr. — Brooklyn
Olney is the player who can make Brooklyn’s attacks work. His 36 chances created lead the squad, and his long pass set up Kanté’s goal against Tulsa. Birmingham have conceded regularly, so Olney should have opportunities to find runners between the lines.
Abdoulaye Kanté — Brooklyn
Kanté made an immediate impact on his return from injury with a goal against Tulsa. He gives Brooklyn pace and purpose on the break, which could be especially useful against a Birmingham defence still searching for consistency.
Head-to-Head
This will be the first completed competitive men’s meeting between Birmingham Legion and Brooklyn FC. The originally scheduled game in Brooklyn on 8 August was postponed after Birmingham suffered travel delays, with the reverse fixture now set for 21 October at Maimonides Park.
Final Verdict
This looks like a game in which the defences are likely to dictate the betting angle. Birmingham have enough attacking depth to hurt a Brooklyn team with a poor away record, but their own run of six matches without a clean sheet makes it difficult to trust them to control the contest.
Brooklyn’s short rest and likely issue at centre-back are clear concerns, yet Olney and Kanté can still make a difference in transition. The main risk is a cautious opening from the visitors after playing most of Saturday’s match with 10 men, but the recent scorelines and defensive records make Over 1.5 Goals HT at 2.20 the call. The correct-score prediction is Birmingham 1-1 Brooklyn.
FreeOddsTips Prediction
Birmingham should create chances at home, while Brooklyn have enough counter-attacking quality to contribute despite their difficult away record. With both defences conceding too freely, the first-half goals line remains the most attractive route into the match at the quoted price.
