England and Spain meet at Wembley on Saturday as two of the leading sides from the 2026 World Cup begin their UEFA Nations League campaigns. Thomas Tuchel’s England finished third in the tournament, while Spain arrive as world and European champions after beating Argentina in the final.

England have been scoring freely, with 20 goals in eight World Cup matches, but their knockout run also exposed some defensive looseness. They conceded in each of their five knockout games, including four in the extraordinary 6-4 win over France in the third-place play-off.

Spain were far more controlled on their way to the trophy. Luis de la Fuente’s side won seven of eight World Cup matches and conceded only once across the tournament. Their midfield balance and wide quality make them difficult to contain, even at Wembley.

England have enough talent to make this competitive, especially with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka available. But Declan Rice’s absence is a major issue against a Spain side led by Rodri, while Ferran Torres arrives after an excellent start to the club season.

Our prediction is 1-2, with Spain to Win at odds of 2.55 our best bet.

Match Preview

This is Matchday 1 in Nations League League A Group A3, with Croatia and Czechia completing a strong group. The top two progress to the March 2027 quarter-finals, so there is real value in making a fast start rather than treating this as a glorified friendly.

England return to Wembley after a World Cup in which they produced some brilliant attacking football. They beat France 6-4 in the bronze-medal match, having also overcome DR Congo, Mexico and Norway in the knockout rounds. Saka hit a hat-trick against France, Bellingham scored seven times at the tournament and Kane added six. There is no question that Tuchel has match-winners.

The concern is how England cope through the middle without Rice. Elliot Anderson has earned his place with his ball-winning work, while Myles Lewis-Skelly, Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs-White and Bellingham offer different midfield solutions. None, though, gives Tuchel the same experience and control that Rice normally brings against elite opposition.

England can still hurt Spain. Kane’s ability to drop into pockets can draw centre-backs out of position, allowing Saka and Anthony Gordon to attack the spaces beyond. Bellingham’s late runs into the area are another obvious problem for Spain. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return also gives England a different passing option from right-back if Tuchel selects him.

Spain come to London with a more settled template. De la Fuente’s 4-3-3 is built around Rodri screening the defence and setting the rhythm, with Pedri, Fabián Ruiz, Dani Olmo or Álex Baena providing technical quality ahead of him. That core helped Spain win the World Cup with seven clean sheets in eight matches.

Out wide, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams give Spain pace and one-v-one quality, while Oyarzabal links the attack together intelligently. Ferran Torres is another major threat after scoring the extra-time winner in the World Cup final and starting the new club season in fine scoring form. Spain can dominate the ball, but they also have the runners to punish England when the game opens up.

Wembley is a serious test and England’s recent competitive record there is excellent: four wins, nine goals scored and no goals conceded in their last four competitive home fixtures. Spain, however, have won each of their last five competitive away games, scoring 11 times without conceding. That away record makes the visitors worth backing at a generous price.

Why Spain to Win Makes Sense

Spain to Win at 2.55 is the standout call because this price looks too big for the reigning world champions. England are dangerous at home and should not be dismissed, but Spain have been more reliable defensively and have the midfield control to take much of the sting out of an open Wembley contest.

Rodri is central to that argument. England’s missing Rice, Palmer, Mainoo and Rashford, with Rice’s withdrawal particularly important in this matchup. Anderson can cover ground and win tackles, but Spain are exceptional at moving opponents around the pitch through Rodri, Pedri and their rotating attacking midfielders. If England chase the ball for long spells, gaps will eventually appear.

Spain’s recent away results show they do not need to turn every match into a shootout. They won 1-0 in Portugal and Uruguay before beating France 2-0 in the World Cup semi-final. Their ability to manage a narrow lead makes a one-goal away success entirely plausible.

The main risk is England’s front line. Kane, Bellingham and Saka can score against anyone, and England have won their last four competitive matches at Wembley. Spain also have a selection issue at right-back following Pedro Porro’s withdrawal, so Gordon or Saka could find room on that side.

Still, Spain look better equipped to control the key areas and have more depth in midfield. At 2.55, the straight Spain win gives us a better price than trying to force a complicated handicap. A tight away victory is the most likely outcome for me.

Team News

England have five confirmed absentees: Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Tino Livramento. James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White have come into the group. Rice’s absence changes the balance of England’s midfield, while Palmer and Rashford remove two high-level attacking alternatives.

Jordan Pickford should return in goal after Dean Henderson started the World Cup third-place match. Kane was also rested from the start against France and is expected to lead the line, with Bellingham, Saka and Gordon competing to support him. Tuchel may use a 4-2-3-1, though England have regularly shifted between back-four and back-three structures.

Spain are without injured right-back Pedro Porro, with Iván Fresneda called up as his replacement. Joan García is also injured and Josep Martínez has entered the goalkeeper group. Eric García is a credible option to cover at right-back, while Unai Simón remains the likely starter in goal.

Fermín López is back after missing the World Cup through injury, adding to Spain’s midfield depth. Gavi is not in the squad, but De la Fuente still has Rodri, Pedri, Fabián Ruiz, Merino, Zubimendi, Olmo and Baena to choose from. Ferran’s form gives the manager another difficult attacking selection decision.

Possible Starting Lineups

England Possible XI

Jordan Pickford; Trent Alexander-Arnold; Ezri Konsa; Marc Guéhi; Lewis Hall; Elliot Anderson; Myles Lewis-Skelly; Bukayo Saka; Jude Bellingham; Anthony Gordon; Harry Kane

Spain Possible XI

Players to Watch

Jude Bellingham — England

Bellingham scored seven goals at the World Cup and remains England’s biggest midfield threat in the final third. With Rice unavailable, he may also need to help England compete physically and aggressively against Spain’s central midfield.

Bukayo Saka — England

Saka’s hat-trick against France underlined how ruthless he can be when England find him early in transition. Spain’s right-back situation is unsettled without Porro, giving Saka a possible route to make a direct impact.

Rodri — Spain

Rodri is the player who can decide the rhythm of the game. If he gets time to receive from Cubarsí and Laporte, Spain should be able to keep England moving and feed their wide attackers in better positions.

Ferran Torres — Spain

Ferran scored the World Cup-winning goal against Argentina and arrives after seven goals in his first six club appearances of the new season. Whether he starts or enters later, his movement around the box gives Spain a genuine match-winning option.

Head-to-Head

Spain won the most recent meeting, beating England 2-1 in the UEFA EURO 2024 final in Berlin. The countries have not met at senior men’s level since that final.

Spain also won 2-1 at Wembley in the Nations League in September 2018, while the previous Wembley meeting ended 2-2 in a 2016 friendly. Those results are not decisive for a new generation of players, but they show that recent meetings have been close and competitive.

Final Verdict

England’s home record, attacking quality and Wembley backing mean this should be a proper contest. Kane, Bellingham and Saka are capable of punishing any slow start from Spain, especially if the visitors are still adjusting at right-back.

But Spain have been the more complete side over the past year. Their World Cup-winning run was built on control, defensive discipline and enough flair in the final third through Yamal, Nico Williams, Olmo and Ferran. Rodri’s influence in a match where England are without Rice could be the key difference.

At 2.55, I am happy to take Spain to win rather than oppose a side that has won five straight competitive away games without conceding. England should score, but Spain can edge a close game. The correct-score prediction is England 1-2 Spain.

FreeOddsTips Prediction

Spain have the midfield control and recent defensive record to justify support at Wembley, even against an England side packed with attacking talent. England can make it uncomfortable, but the visitors look better placed to manage the important moments and find a narrow win.
