Finland welcome Belarus to Helsinki Olympic Stadium on Tuesday with an early chance to take control of UEFA Nations League C1. Jacob Friis’ side made a flying start by beating San Marino 7-0, while Belarus opened their campaign with a 2-0 defeat in Albania.

The margin in San Marino needs sensible context, but Finland played with real purpose. Joel Pohjanpalo scored a hat-trick, Leo Walta struck twice and created the first two goals, while Adrian Svanbäck marked his senior debut with a goal and assist. Friis has a young, talented group with more attacking options than Finland have often had in recent years.

Belarus are still finding their feet under Viktor Goncharenko. Their first competitive game under the new manager exposed some familiar problems: they offered little threat in Albania, conceded twice before half-time and now face a quick trip north after only two full days between fixtures.

Finland should have too much quality in the final third, although their own home defensive record means Belarus cannot be completely dismissed. Our prediction is Finland 3-1 Belarus, with Finland Asian Handicap -1 at odds of 2.50 our best bet.

Match Preview

Finland could hardly have asked for a better opening night in League C1. Their 7-0 win away to San Marino put them top on goal difference after matchday one, level on three points with Albania. Promotion back to League B is the clear target, and every goal could matter in a four-team group.

Friis used a 4-3-3 in Serravalle and his midfield was fluid rather than rigid. Adam Marhiev, Kaan Kairinen and Walta regularly swapped positions, helping Finland control possession and create openings from central areas. Finland had 71% possession and 21 attempts, although the second half was made easier by San Marino’s red card.

What matters more for this game is the variety Finland showed. Walta delivered for Pohjanpalo and Svanbäck before scoring twice himself, while Benjamin Källman also got on the scoresheet. Pohjanpalo remains the focal point, but the movement around him from Källman, Svanbäck and the advancing midfielders gives Finland several ways to hurt a defence.

There is still a caveat. Finland have lost three of their last five competitive home matches and have not kept a clean sheet in that run. The full-back areas are not entirely settled either, so Belarus may find moments to counter if Finland commit bodies forward.

Belarus arrive with a new manager and a short turnaround. Goncharenko set his team up in a 4-3-3 against Albania, with Max Ebong and Aleksandr Selyava supplying the midfield base and Valery Gromyko asked to provide the imagination. Listed possession was even, but Belarus managed only two attempts on target and were under pressure for much of the contest.

Zakhar Volkov captains a defence that has been weakened by the injuries to recognised full-backs Vladislav Malkevich and Gleb Shevchenko. Fedor Lapoukhov will need a strong night in goal, while Kirill Pechenin’s experience on the left and Ebong’s work in midfield will be important if Belarus are to stay in the game.

Up front, German Barkovskiy started in Tirana, but Vitali Lisakovich is the more established scorer in this squad and could push for a start. Belarus have enough pace through players such as Artem Kontsevoy, Yevgeny Malashevich and Anton Kovalev to cause problems on a break, but they need to offer far more than they did in Albania.

Why Finland Asian Handicap -1 Makes Sense

At 2.50, I prefer Finland Asian Handicap -1 to a short straight Finland win. Finland need to win by two goals or more for a full return, but a one-goal victory returns the stake. That extra protection is useful in an international match where Belarus may make the opening stages scrappy.

Finland’s attack has momentum after seven goals in San Marino. Pohjanpalo gives them a dependable target in the box, Walta has the confidence of a two-goal display and Källman plus Svanbäck can stretch the Belarus back line. The hosts should see plenty of the ball and have enough runners around their main striker to turn territorial control into chances.

Belarus have won none of their last five competitive matches, scoring only three goals and conceding 12 across that sequence. Their Albania display also came before this difficult travel schedule, and Goncharenko may still be searching for the right combinations after making two changes at half-time in Tirana.

The main risk is Finland’s defensive record at home. Belarus do have players capable of producing a counter-attacking moment, and a Finland win by exactly one goal would only see the stake returned. Still, Finland’s greater attacking depth and Belarus’s current defensive absences make a two-goal home win a realistic outcome.

Team News

Finland could restore Lukas Hradecky after the captain was rested against San Marino, although Viljami Sinisalo kept a clean sheet in that game. Adam Ståhl and Juho Lähteenmäki have both returned from the injuries that ruled them out in June, giving Friis more balance in the full-back positions.

Leo Walta was taken off after 70 minutes against San Marino with what appeared to be cramp, so his fitness is worth watching. Miro Tenho missed the opener through injury and remains a doubt, while Leo Väisänen and Doni Arifi were added to the group as extra options. Naatan Skyttä is unavailable through injury.

Belarus remain without injured full-backs Vladislav Malkevich and Gleb Shevchenko. Anton Lukashov and Yegor Parkhomenko were called up as cover. Ivan Tikhomirov and Artem Kontsevoy were both replaced at half-time against Albania, which could open the door for Kirill Gomanov and Anton Kovalev to start in Helsinki.

Possible Starting Lineups

Finland Possible XI

Hradecky; Ståhl; Koski; Samuli Miettinen; Lähteenmäki; Marhiev; Kairinen; Walta; Svanbäck; Pohjanpalo; Källman

Belarus Possible XI

Players to Watch

Joel Pohjanpalo — Finland

Pohjanpalo is Finland’s main reference point in attack and comes into this fixture after his first senior international hat-trick. His movement in the area and ability to finish crosses make him the obvious player Belarus must contain.

Leo Walta — Finland

Walta was at the centre of Finland’s best work against San Marino, scoring twice and setting up the first two goals. If fit, his willingness to arrive late in the box can be difficult for a midfield that sits too deep.

Max Ebong — Belarus

Ebong has the experience to help Belarus compete in midfield. He will need to break up Finland’s passing moves and give Gromyko a platform to get on the ball higher up the pitch.

Vitali Lisakovich — Belarus

Lisakovich is Belarus’s most proven scorer in the current squad. Whether he starts or enters from the bench, Finland cannot allow him space around the penalty area if the game becomes stretched.

Head-to-Head

Belarus have not beaten Finland in five senior meetings, drawing three and losing two. Finland won the most recent encounter 2-0 at home in a June 2018 friendly.

The sides also drew both of their 2013 World Cup qualifying meetings, with Finland winning 1-0 at home before a 1-1 draw in Belarus. Belarus’s away record in Finland is two draws and two defeats.

Final Verdict

Finland have to back up their San Marino result against a much more competitive opponent, but this is a favourable home fixture. Friis has a youthful, energetic side with Pohjanpalo as the finishing point and enough creativity around him to keep Belarus under pressure.

Belarus may score if Finland leave room in transition, which is the biggest threat to the bet. Yet their lack of attacking output in Albania, defensive injury problems and tight turnaround all point towards Finland controlling the match. At 2.50, Finland Asian Handicap -1 remains the best way to support the hosts. The correct-score prediction is Finland 3-1 Belarus.

FreeOddsTips Prediction

Finland should dictate possession and create enough chances to pull clear, especially if Walta, Källman and Svanbäck can support Pohjanpalo as effectively as they did in the opening match. Belarus have the players to make the scoreline competitive, but Finland Asian Handicap -1 gives useful cover if the hosts only win by one.
