Manchester City welcome newly promoted Coventry to the Etihad Stadium in Premier League Matchweek 3, with Enzo Maresca’s side looking to extend their perfect start.
City followed a late 2-1 win over Bournemouth by beating Crystal Palace 4-1, with Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki scoring twice each. They have six goals from their opening two league matches, although they are yet to keep a clean sheet in any competition this season.
Coventry have lost to Arsenal and Hull without scoring since returning to the top flight. Frank Lampard’s team did, however, win 4-2 at Plymouth in the EFL Cup and their set-piece strength gives them a possible route to a goal at the Etihad.
City’s attacking form, Coventry’s difficult adjustment to Premier League football and the chance of an open second half all point towards goals. Our prediction is 4-1, with Over 3.5 Goals at odds of 1.91 our best bet.

Match Preview
Manchester City have responded well to their 3-0 Community Shield defeat against Arsenal. The comeback victory over Bournemouth was not straightforward, but goals from Marc Guéhi and Joško Gvardiol turned the game around in the closing minutes. City then produced a much stronger attacking display at Crystal Palace, winning 4-1 and creating enough chances to have scored more.
Maresca has started with a flexible 4-2-3-1. Erling Haaland leads the line, while Cherki, Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo can change positions behind him. Foden connects midfield with the attack, Semenyo supplies direct running and Cherki has quickly become the main creative influence. The Frenchman has already recorded two goals and two assists in two league appearances.
The midfield is still taking shape after a major summer rebuild. Elliot Anderson has started each competitive match, while Guéhi has been used in an unusual holding role. Deadline-day signing Enzo Fernández gives Maresca another midfielder who can control the ball and make late runs into the box. This looks like a suitable fixture for his first start, although City’s Champions League trip to Porto three days later may also influence the selection.
Coventry arrive at the Etihad still searching for their first Premier League point and goal of the season. They were beaten 3-0 at Arsenal before losing 1-0 at home to Hull. Lampard’s side had 68% possession and 11 attempts against Hull, but their passing was too slow and they were caught on the counterattack for Liam Millar’s late winner.
That result showed the size of Coventry’s challenge. They scored 97 goals on the way to winning the Championship, but Premier League defences are giving them less room around the penalty area. Taiwo Awoniyi offers strength through the middle, Jack Rudoni can find space behind him and Ephron Mason-Clark provides direct running from the left. Matt Grimes remains important because of his passing and set-piece delivery.
Lampard may move from 4-2-3-1 to a back five, bringing Ethan Pinnock into central defence alongside Bobby Thomas and Aurèle Amenda. That could help Coventry defend their box, but sitting deep for long periods brings its own problems against Haaland, Cherki and Foden. If Coventry become stretched after conceding, City have the attacking options to add further goals.

Why Over 3.5 Goals Makes Sense
Over 3.5 Goals requires at least four goals, and Manchester City may be capable of doing most of that work themselves. They have scored six times across two league games and have found the net at least twice in seven of their last 10 competitive matches.
The way Coventry conceded against Hull is especially relevant. Their defenders had moved forward for a corner before one direct pass allowed Hull to break into open space. City are far more dangerous in those situations, with Semenyo able to carry the ball at speed and Foden or Cherki capable of finding Haaland before Coventry can recover.
Coventry are likely to defend deeper at the Etihad, but they cannot simply abandon their own attack. Awoniyi gives them a target for clearances and crosses, while Grimes can test City from free-kicks and corners. Coventry scored a Championship-high 29 set-piece goals last season, including 19 headers, and City have conceded in all three of their competitive matches under Maresca.
The main risk is that Coventry’s switch to a five-man defence slows the match down, particularly if City rotate before travelling to Porto. Coventry could protect the central areas and force City to spend long spells passing in front of them. Even so, the quality of City’s front four and the visitors’ need to chase the game if they fall behind make 1.91 an appealing price.
A fast City start would be ideal for the bet. Once Coventry have to move further up the pitch, the gaps around their midfield and wing-backs should increase. That is when Cherki, Foden and Haaland can turn a controlled home win into a high-scoring one.

Team News
Manchester City could hand Enzo Fernández his debut after his deadline-day move from Chelsea. Iliman Ndiaye is another new option, but it is unclear whether either player will be asked to complete the full match so soon after joining.
Jérémy Doku missed the victories over Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, while Matheus Nunes was left out at Palace after Maresca said he was not fully fit. Ayyoub Bouaddi is available after making his debut from the bench, and Mateo Kovačić provides an experienced alternative if Anderson is rested.
Coventry will be without Haji Wright, while Frank Onyeka and Sidiki Cherif need to be assessed. Bobby Thomas was withdrawn with cramp against Hull but is expected to be available. Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Luke Woolfenden have also been sidelined, while Stephen Mfuni cannot face his parent club.
Pinnock could make his first Coventry start if Lampard chooses a back five. Awoniyi is expected to continue up front, with Mason-Clark, Rudoni and Gustavo Hamer competing for the supporting roles.
Possible Starting Lineups
Manchester City Possible XI
Gianluigi Donnarumma; Abdukodir Khusanov; Rúben Dias; Joško Gvardiol; Nico O’Reilly; Elliot Anderson; Enzo Fernández; Phil Foden; Rayan Cherki; Antoine Semenyo; Erling Haaland
Coventry Possible XI
Carl Rushworth; Milan van Ewijk; Bobby Thomas; Ethan Pinnock; Aurèle Amenda; Jay Dasilva; Caleb Yirenkyi; Matt Grimes; Jack Rudoni; Ephron Mason-Clark; Taiwo Awoniyi
Players to Watch
Rayan Cherki — Manchester City
Cherki has made an immediate impact with two assists against Bournemouth and two goals at Crystal Palace. His close control and ability to receive between the lines could be particularly effective if Coventry defend around the edge of their penalty area.
Erling Haaland — Manchester City
Haaland opened his league account with two goals at Palace. Coventry’s centre-backs have plenty of height, but containing his movement across the six-yard box for 90 minutes is a much harder task.
Matt Grimes — Coventry
Grimes will be responsible for helping Coventry play through City’s press and delivering their set pieces. His left foot could be important if Coventry are unable to create many chances from open play.
Taiwo Awoniyi — Coventry
Awoniyi scored and assisted in the EFL Cup win at Plymouth. His strength can give Coventry a way out when they are under pressure, and he will need to make the most of any space left behind City’s attacking full-backs.
Head-to-Head
This is the first competitive meeting between the teams since March 2002, when Manchester City won 4-2 at Maine Road in the second tier. Coventry had won the reverse fixture 4-3 at Highfield Road earlier that season.
Coventry are unbeaten in their last eight top-flight meetings with City, including a 2-1 victory in Manchester in August 2000. That record is interesting, but its betting relevance is limited given the length of time since the clubs last shared the Premier League.
Final Verdict
Manchester City are expected to dominate possession and spend most of the afternoon around Coventry’s penalty area. Coventry may begin with five defenders, but City can attack through several different players and also have the bench strength to maintain the pressure after the break.
Coventry’s set pieces and Awoniyi’s physical presence make a consolation goal possible. City are still adapting to Maresca’s pressing demands and have not kept a clean sheet this season, so the visitors should not be dismissed completely.
The biggest concern is City’s schedule, with the trip to Porto following only three days later. Rotation could affect their rhythm, but a possible start for Enzo Fernández would add another quality passer behind an attack already in good form. At 1.91, Over 3.5 Goals remains the best bet, with Manchester City expected to win 4-1.
FreeOddsTips Prediction
City should create too many chances for a newly promoted Coventry side still adjusting to the pace of the Premier League. Coventry can contribute through a set piece or counterattack, but the home attack is expected to drive this match beyond three goals.
