Manchester United begin their return to the Champions League with a Matchday 1 meeting against Azerbaijani champions Sabah Baku at Old Trafford on Thursday night. Michael Carrick’s side are back in Europe’s top competition for the first time in three seasons, and they will expect to make their class count at home.
There has been plenty of entertainment in United’s early Premier League games. They have scored seven goals in three matches, including a 5-2 win over Ipswich, but have also conceded twice in each of those fixtures. Their latest game ended Everton 2-2 Manchester United, with a stoppage-time equaliser denying them the points after they had led twice.
Sabah arrive with real confidence rather than simply making up the numbers. Valdas Dambrauskas’s reigning Azerbaijani champions have won their first three league games without conceding and thrashed Zirə 5-0 last weekend. They also came through four Champions League qualifying rounds, scoring freely on the way to their first league-phase campaign.
United should create plenty at Old Trafford, but Sabah have enough attacking quality and belief to take one big opportunity if it comes. Our prediction is Manchester United 4-1 Sabah Baku, with Both Teams to Score at odds of 2.10 our best bet.

Match Preview
Manchester United have had no trouble finding goals under Carrick, even if the first three league results have been uneven. Bruno Fernandes hit a hat-trick against Ipswich, Bryan Mbeumo has scored in each of the last two league matches, and Benjamin Sesko came off the bench to score late on at Everton. There is plenty of firepower in the squad, and Old Trafford has been especially open recently.
United have won four of their last five competitive home games, scoring 14 goals. Every one of those matches saw both sides score and produced over 2.5 goals. That run includes high-scoring wins over Ipswich, Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, and it points towards another game in which United attack with confidence but leave opportunities for the opposition.
Carrick has used a 4-2-3-1 throughout the league season. Mainoo and Youri Tielemans have formed the recent midfield pairing, allowing Fernandes to work in the No. 10 role behind the striker. Mbeumo gives United direct running from the right, while Matheus Cunha can drift into pockets and link the front line. Sesko is pushing hard for a start after his Everton goal and would give United a more conventional focal point in the box.
The problem has been at the other end. United have conceded six goals in three league matches and have yet to keep a clean sheet this season. They twice failed to see out a lead at Everton. Lisandro Martínez brings aggression and quality on the ball from centre-back, but the side still need to become more secure when opponents break through midfield or attack late in games.
Sabah will be well aware of the gap in resources and experience, but their route to Manchester shows why they should not be dismissed. They eliminated The New Saints, KuPS, AGF and Hapoel Be’er Sheva in qualifying, winning six of eight games. Their domestic start has been just as impressive: three wins, eight goals scored and none conceded.
Dambrauskas has built a confident 4-2-3-1 side that can press, play forward quickly and commit players around the penalty area. Umarali Rakhmonaliev and Ivan Lepinjica offer energy in midfield, while Aleksey Isaev can supply the final pass. On the flanks, Veljko Simić and Joy-Lance Mickels give Sabah genuine attacking quality. Simić scored six times during qualifying, while Mickels arrives after a hat-trick against Zirə.
Sabah are unlikely to dominate possession at Old Trafford, but they do not need to. Their attacking players have shown they can make the most of quick breaks and isolated chances. Christian Nwachukwu scored in the 5-0 win over Zirə, while Patrick Orphé Mbina is another forward option who has already delivered important goals in Europe. United should win the game, but the visitors have enough to make a clean sheet far from straightforward.

Why Both Teams to Score Makes Sense
At 2.10, Both Teams to Score is the more appealing route than trying to force a price on the Manchester United win. United are overwhelming favourites and should spend long spells on the front foot, but the straight win offers little value when Carrick’s team have been so loose defensively in the opening weeks.
The home side have scored seven times in three league matches, so there is a strong case for United doing their part. Fernandes is in form, Mbeumo is finding the net regularly, and either Cunha or Sesko gives them a serious central threat. Sabah kept three clean sheets in their opening domestic fixtures, but this is a major step up and they will have to defend deep for long periods against a much stronger group of attackers.
The key to the bet is Sabah scoring once, and their recent numbers make that realistic. They have scored 24 goals in their last 10 competitive matches, with Mickels on eight goals in 11 appearances this season and Simić carrying a proven Champions League qualifying record. Rakhmonaliev’s running and passing from midfield can also help them get beyond United’s first press.
United’s defensive record adds weight to the selection. They have conceded twice in all three Premier League games, while both teams have scored in each of their last five home matches. Sabah do not have to match United chance for chance; one clean counter, set piece or moment of quality from Mickels or Simić could be enough.
The obvious risk is that United score early and control the game without allowing Sabah any rhythm. Sabah’s six clean sheets in their last 10 matches show they are disciplined, but their away defeats to Hapoel Be’er Sheva and AGF also show they can be exposed against stronger opposition. Still, this is an attack-minded visiting side facing a United defence that has not yet found a clean sheet. At this price, I like both teams to find the net.

Team News
Manchester United are without Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, Carlos Baleba, Amad Diallo and Tom Heaton. Rashford faces a late fitness test after a muscle issue, while Luke Shaw’s workload has been managed following the Everton match. Those factors could open the door for Mazraoui, Yoro and Dalot to feature in defence, with Sesko a strong candidate to lead the line.
Sabah have no confirmed suspensions. Xayal Aliyev has been reported as a possible injury concern, although the visitors otherwise have a strong group to choose from after their 5-0 win over Zirə. Du Queiroz made his debut from the bench in that game after joining on loan, but his Champions League squad status will determine whether he is available here.
Possible Starting Lineups
Manchester United Possible XI
Lammens; Mazraoui; Yoro; Lisandro Martínez; Dalot; Tielemans; Mainoo; Mbeumo; Bruno Fernandes; Cunha; Sesko
Sabah Baku Possible XI
Pokatilov; Zedadka; Solvet; Dashdamirov; Puchacz; Rakhmonaliev; Lepinjica; Simić; Isaev; Nwachukwu; Mickels
Players to Watch
Bruno Fernandes — Manchester United
Fernandes remains the player who sets United’s attacking rhythm. His hat-trick against Ipswich was a reminder that he can score as well as create, and Sabah will need to stop him receiving the ball between their midfield and defence.
Bryan Mbeumo — Manchester United
Mbeumo has scored in United’s last two league games and his movement from the right can stretch Sabah’s back line. He should find space if Puchacz pushes forward to support the visitors’ attacks.
Joy-Lance Mickels — Sabah Baku
Mickels is Sabah’s standout attacking threat after his hat-trick against Zirə. He has the pace and confidence to hurt United in transition, making him central to the case for Both Teams to Score.
Veljko Simić — Sabah Baku
Simić scored six goals in Champions League qualifying and opened the scoring in Sabah’s latest league win. His ability to arrive in advanced areas gives Dambrauskas another route to a goal beyond Mickels.
Head-to-Head
This is the first meeting between Manchester United and Sabah Baku. Neither club had previously faced opposition from the other’s country, so there is no meaningful head-to-head record to lean on.
Final Verdict
Manchester United should have too much quality over 90 minutes, particularly with Fernandes, Mbeumo and Sesko capable of overwhelming a Sabah defence that has not faced this level of opposition. Their recent home matches have been open, high-scoring affairs, and another strong attacking display is expected.
However, United have conceded in every league game this season and have shown a habit of allowing opponents back into matches. Sabah are not coming to Old Trafford in poor form: they have scored heavily through qualifying and arrive after a 5-0 league win. The main risk is United controlling the contest so completely that Sabah barely create, but the visitors have enough pace and final-third quality to make one chance count.
From a betting point of view, Both Teams to Score at 2.10 looks good value. Expect United to win a lively opening European night, with the correct-score prediction Manchester United 4-1 Sabah Baku.
FreeOddsTips Prediction
Manchester United are expected to take control through their stronger forward options, but Sabah have earned their place in this competition by playing positively and scoring goals. United’s early defensive record means the visitors have a realistic chance of contributing, which keeps Both Teams to Score attractive at the quoted price.
