RB Leipzig welcome PSV Eindhoven to the Red Bull Arena on Tuesday night needing a response in the Champions League after their 4-1 defeat at Como on matchday one.
Martín Demichelis’ side could not be arriving in better domestic attacking form. Leipzig dismantled Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0 on Saturday, with Christopher Nkunku scoring a hat-trick, and have scored 14 goals without reply in their three competitive home matches this season.
PSV are also built to attack under Peter Bosz. They have scored 27 goals across their last 10 competitive games, while all four of their away matches this season have produced over 2.5 goals and both teams have scored in each of them.
The concern for PSV is a shortage of recognised centre-forwards, but that has not stopped them creating chances through Guus Til, Sven Mijnans, Esmir Bajraktarević and their adventurous full-backs. FreeOddsTips’ prediction is Over 3.5 Goals at 2.10, with a 3-2 Leipzig win expected.
Match Preview
Leipzig’s home performances have been relentless. Their 4-2-3-1 gives Nkunku freedom between the lines, Antonio Nusa attacks from the left and Rômulo provides a focal point, while David Raum and Ridle Baku push forward from full-back. Frankfurt could not live with that speed of combination play or Leipzig’s transition threat.
PSV are unlikely to sit deep for 90 minutes. Bosz wants his side to press high and regain the ball quickly, but he admitted after the Heerenveen win that PSV can leave the pitch too big when their control breaks down. That is a dangerous habit against Leipzig, yet PSV’s aggressive approach should also create spaces to attack a Leipzig side beaten 4-1 at Como in their European opener.
Both teams have enough attacking runners and enough risk in their game to make a four-goal line realistic. Leipzig should create heavily at home, while PSV’s away record shows that they usually contribute at least one goal even when the match becomes open.
