Fenerbahce begin their first Champions League league-phase campaign since 2008/09 with a demanding Matchday 1 test against Roma in Istanbul. İsmail Kartal’s side came through three qualifying rounds unbeaten, including an impressive 2-1 win at Lyon, but they arrive after losing 2-1 at home to Beşiktaş in the derby.
Roma travel in excellent early-season shape under Gian Piero Gasperini. The Giallorossi have won all three Serie A matches, scoring 10 goals, and showed plenty of character to come from behind and beat Atalanta 2-1 last weekend.
Fenerbahce will have the crowd behind them and carry genuine threat through Mason Greenwood, Kerem Aktürkoğlu and Vedat Muriqi. Match Preview
Fenerbahce deserve credit for getting this far. They negotiated qualifying ties against Górnik Zabrze, Sturm Graz and Lyon without defeat, winning four of six matches. The result in Lyon was particularly eye-catching: Muriqi put them ahead before Archie Brown struck from a set-piece situation to seal a 2-1 away victory.
That European run has been more convincing than Fenerbahce’s domestic start. They have taken six points from four Süper Lig games and their derby defeat to Beşiktaş showed the concern at the other end. Milan Škriniar headed them in front, but Fenerbahce conceded twice and were beaten in a home match they had started brightly.
Kartal is likely to stay with a 4-2-3-1. Ederson is now established in goal following Dominik Livaković’s move to Barcelona, while Škriniar and Nathan Aké give the back line experience. N’Golo Kanté will have a major job screening the defence and winning second balls, but he is likely to be paired with İsmail Yüksek rather than Guendouzi.
That change matters. Guendouzi has been suspended and Asensio is unavailable with a thigh problem, taking out two players who could have helped Fenerbahce play through Roma’s press. Greenwood has scored twice in qualifying and can create or finish from the attacking positions, while Muriqi offers a direct target and Lukaku is a powerful option from the bench. But Fenerbahce may need to rely more on wide breaks and set pieces than controlled possession.
Roma have made a far sharper start. Gasperini’s team opened Serie A with a 4-0 win over Fiorentina, followed it with a 4-0 victory at Lecce, then recovered from 1-0 down to beat Atalanta 2-1. Mario Hermoso scored from a corner in the 90th minute before Matías Soulé won it in added time from Paulo Dybala’s assist.
The visitors’ 3-4-2-1 has quickly taken shape. Gianluca Mancini, Evan Ndicka and Hermoso form the usual back three, while Bryan Cristante and Manu Koné bring leadership, physicality and running in midfield. The wing-back positions will be important in Istanbul, especially if Nahuel Molina starts on the right and Wesley pushes forward from the opposite flank.
Further forward, Roma look difficult to contain. Malen has scored five goals in three league matches, including a hat-trick against Fiorentina and two at Lecce. Dybala remains the key creative player, having supplied three assists for Malen in the opener and the pass for Soulé’s winner against Atalanta. Soulé, Rodrigo Mora and Santiago Castro give Gasperini different ways to change the attack if the game opens up late on.
Fenerbahce can make life uncomfortable in Istanbul, particularly early on, but Roma’s pressing game and stronger midfield options could gradually take the sting out of the atmosphere. If the Italian side can move Fenerbahce’s double pivot around and get Dybala and Soulé facing the defence, Malen should receive the service he needs.

Why AS Roma to Win Makes Sense
Roma are not facing an easy away night, which is why the straight win price of 2.40 is interesting. Fenerbahce have a strong recent European record at home and have won their last three home games against Italian opponents without conceding. The market has rightly accounted for the venue and the intensity Fenerbahce will bring.
For me, though, Roma’s current level makes them worth backing. They have won all three competitive games under Gasperini this season, scored 10 times and have shown they can win in different ways. Lecce were swept aside early, while Atalanta were beaten by Roma’s late pressure, bench impact and set-piece threat.
The biggest reason for preferring Roma is the midfield matchup. Kanté remains an outstanding ball-winner, but Guendouzi’s suspension is a substantial loss against a side that presses as aggressively as Gasperini’s Roma. Asensio’s absence also removes Fenerbahce’s clearest central creator, and Talisca is no longer there to provide goals from midfield or set pieces.
Roma should have enough control through Cristante and Koné to keep the ball moving, then enough attacking craft through Dybala and Soulé to find Malen in dangerous positions. Malen’s movement across the front can stretch Škriniar and Aké, particularly if Roma’s wing-backs pin Fenerbahce’s full-backs back.
The main risk is obvious: Fenerbahce have pace and quality in the wide areas, and Greenwood or Kerem can create a moment that changes the game. Muriqi is also a serious set-piece threat.
